As far as I was concerned, the important bit was the spinning globe (ethereal though it was); but who am I to argue with the announcer, denton.
Technically the globe was the logo but for awhile they did something with the 1 and used it as a logo and had they gone in that direction I think it would have rivalled the 2 for creativity.
I do hate to be a pain in the ass, but the globe was a symbol not a logo - which was my original, spectacularly unsuccessful, point.
A logo is something which can (and typically does) appear in other formats, such as print.
I have no recollection of ever seeing the globe used anywhere other than the screen, and as such couldn't be classed as a "logotype" by the definition I understand.
