Perhaps, and this is merely speculation, but, the trailer producers made the trails for the new look, and the old look was simply achieved quickly by placing an 'old'-look box on?

Old look on what? A clean trail? They're clearly producing trails for forthcoming programmes (inc. Strictly) with the regular box so I think it's pretty safe to assume the lighter box was merely a cockup!
Wonder if there's any opportunity for those badly edited stings to get an airing?! I don't think they were ever shown on Network but occasionally popped up in the Nations in the early days. Or alternatively, the 'Rush Hour' / rooftop promotion for one night only!
I think it would run more like this;
4.45 Match of the day live
7.05 robin hood
7.50 strictly come dancing
8.50 casualty
9.40 strictly come dancing
10.10 news
10.30 lottery draws
10.35 match of the day

Not sure I ever saw those.
I certainly never saw any footage of stings, be it on TV or online.
I'm guessing they were just segments from the idents, as the BBC TWO lot were? If they were no different to a slice of the ident sequence, then maybe it's not surprising they aren't in-use.
You'd have thought all stings would be created with a different camera angle on the action and a special shortened 'jingle' to fit at least, rather than just lifted from something else, same sound, same view.

The interclips were, and occasionally still are, used on BBC 1 NI. There are three different versions for Capoera, two for Tap Dogs, one each for Haka, Hip Hop, Skateboarders, Ballet. I think that is all of them.
