I get the feeling that the new idents are going to be hated 100x more than the dancers. You'll be looking back at the dancers with a fond sigh in a couple of years when you see what's coming!
Is that an indication that you know more about the content of these new idents or is just a feeling you have?
A friend of mine has seen them and he is a bit of an ident anorak too, and he hates them. I trust his judgement!
If that last statement is true, ring your friend and ask him to describe what he saw to you. Then tell us on here. We'll tell you if we are going to hate them or not...............If no description is posted then obviously it is all a load of baloney!

He visits this forum occasionally, so maybe he'll tell you himself! He didn't go into any detail with me, though. Basically, he said if you thought the dancers were bad, wait till you see what's going to replace them!

Must admit I've not been following this thread much, but I've just been reading a bit about it on Wikipedia...
Quote:
In August 2005, BBC One controller Peter Fincham has hinted that the dancers may be on their way out. He told the Edinburgh International Television Festival that "it may well be that the time is coming to look at
a new way of doing it
. No date or direct decision has been made but it's under review".
According to the Media Guardian, Fincham has confirmed that in Autumn 2006, the 'Rhythm and Movement' idents will be replaced with a new
presentation package
, along with a new schedule. As speculated, Red Bee Media (formerly BBC Broadcast) will create the new
presentation package
. Red Bee created the new idents for the ITV channels that were introduced in January 2006.
...and it makes me think that BBC One will not have any idents any more. Or at least not idents as we know them now.
If they do go this way, it makes sense. What is the point of the ident as we know it now? Formerly it was to introduce the next programme, and brand the channel. Well you can tell what the programme is because it usually has it's own titles, and as for branding, surely there's enough of that in the trailers between the programmes.
They should ditch idents (AKA 'symbols') but I very much doubt they will.
It would be very nice to see a mainstream UK channel move away from the trail, trail, ident, programme model and come up with something more radical.
There are many more ways to do a junction wihout having to finish it with a 10 second bit of video to ident the channel.
What BBC1 needs is a strong, memorable symbol. It doesn't matter how it's portrayed as long as the symbol is there. It could be anything bold. A number 1, a Child, a box, a moon, a sun. What it could also be is this.
Imagine a black and white image of countryside. Trees swaying, cars gently driving by. Then, in the meadow is ONE bold red cow. All the others are in black and white but there is ONE red cow. As oon as the cow comes into shot, the BBC box logo appears in the centre of the screen.
Ident Two: A black and white picture of a beach with sea rushing in. Then ONE bold red beach ball comes into shot with a black and white throwing it. Again the Box Log appears in the centre of the screen.
Then you could have a busy town centre with people rushing by. ONE bold red car drives along the road. You get the picture. You could do this with lots of images. It certainly would represent British life better than the dancers.
However.....this isn't going to happen as apparently something awful is going to place any day soon!

podder, what is your friend's name? We shall look out for him and ask him when he's next here.
