Everyone seems to be sure that the box is staying but i haven't heard anything saying that it is. How do you know?

We now the box will stay becouse when BBC4 had a new look it had the box so it makes sence to have the box on every channel.

That's not sufficient evidence! Just because BBC FOUR kept them doesn't mean BBC ONE will!

Uff!

Absolutely... and can I just make a plea that people stop making 'Here's what we know for definite so far...' posts, based on assumed, mis-read, half-read, and most probably dreamt information? It's very irritating.

That sums it up quite nicely, yes.

Must admit I've not been following this thread much, but I've just been reading a bit about it on Wikipedia...

Quote:
In August 2005, BBC One controller Peter Fincham has hinted that the dancers may be on their way out. He told the Edinburgh International Television Festival that "it may well be that the time is coming to look at a new way of doing it . No date or direct decision has been made but it's under review".

According to the Media Guardian, Fincham has confirmed that in Autumn 2006, the 'Rhythm and Movement' idents will be replaced with a new presentation package , along with a new schedule. As speculated, Red Bee Media (formerly BBC Broadcast) will create the new presentation package . Red Bee created the new idents for the ITV channels that were introduced in January 2006.

...and it makes me think that BBC One will not have any idents any more. Or at least not idents as we know them now.

If they do go this way, it makes sense. What is the point of the ident as we know it now? Formerly it was to introduce the next programme, and brand the channel. Well you can tell what the programme is because it usually has it's own titles, and as for branding, surely there's enough of that in the trailers between the programmes.

I think they'll ditch idents and just have well branded trails between the programmes, with perhaps more strict requirements for programme titles to fit in with the branding.

But surely you will need to have some sort of "identifier" - whether you want to call it an ident or a graphic - to let the viewer know which of the BBC channels they are watching? Otherwise every BBC channel will look the same from the viewer's point of view, with all the cross-promotion that goes on these days.

I don't think they will ditch the idents entirely. Perhaps they will be more integrated into the presentation of the channel during breaks in programmes. Perhaps the menu will be integrated into the idents themselves, or vice versa. I don't agree that "idents" are obsolete yet - at least not in their simplest role - to "identify" the channel. They will change and adapt, but they will still be there in some shape or form.

i don't like the idea of going straight from trailers into the show. there needs to be a pause to show that a programme is about to start.

In the cinema you have the orange "turn off your mobile" ad, and then the BBFC certificate appear as the lights dim. Simply the appearance of the orange advert usually causes the audience to stop talking (in my cinema at least)

Currently, all the main channels have a set ident which is just the channel's branding with someone talking over it, which comes on before a programme starts.

I'm just saying that I think that may disappear.

considering the uproar the BBC caused when they ditched the balloon for the current batch, I find it hard to believe that they'd get rid of idents altogether.

I'll be very very very surprised if they get rid of idents.

I agree. They have many uses including informing you of which channel you are watching, what is coming up in the near future on the channel, programme advice and also a break between trails and the start of the programme, to name but a few uses.
I doubt that the idents will be disappearing.

The very thought makes me shudder.

I get the feeling that the new idents are going to be hated 100x more than the dancers. You'll be looking back at the dancers with a fond sigh in a couple of years when you see what's coming!
