To the people that said the new idents would launch in October roundabout the launch of shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Robin Hood, well it looks like you could be right. I was talking to somebody on the Outpost Gallifrey forum and they said that there's talk of the idents debuting around then; he also said knowing the BBC that date could change. He said he'll PM me if and when he gets anymore news. So I'll let you know as soon as I find out.

So it looks like October for the new idents, just like when the balloon debuted in 1997.

Thanks for the info Smile Im thinking Saturday 7th October. Lets hope we get some more info soon.....

Do you think Robin Hood and Strictly Come Dancing will launch on the same day? The October date does seem to make sense to me now. It's just that before, the new season on TV would start in September; but there's nothing major on BBC1 in September on Saturday it's just series coming to an end like Maria and filler shows like Test The Nation.

I reckon Robin Hood starts in September - otherwise they'll be a gap between when Maria finishes and SCD starts with nothing on. I reckon it might start on the 23rd September, finishing on 16th December - the big SCD final will probably be on the 23rd Dec which would take up a lot of airtime so Robin Hood finishing a week earlier makes a lot of sense.

Maria and In It to Win It both finish on the 16th September, so the new lottery show 1 vs 100 would also most likely start on the 23rd.

Strictly Come Dancing is longer than ever before with 14 couples (last year it was 12) therefore is most likely start about two weeks early then last year.

EDIT: With 14 couples, it cant not be done in a hour long show, will need about one and half hour show for main show and another half hour for the results show. How long is Robin Hood?? Most likely one hour Confused:

Yeah last year it lasted 10 weeks, so if it last's 12 it'll probably be a October 7th start, maybe September 30th.

Now that is interesting, obviously the BBC wants to stretch out this series a bit longer as it's one of their few hits. The same thing happened with Noel's House Party, the first series was supposed to have 16 editions but as it took off the BBC asked them to increase it to 18 then it went to 20/26 editions.

Last year it ran for an hour and a quarter pretty much throughout the run i think. So the schedule will certainly be a bit tight on Saturday nights. I guess it'll be something like this -
6.00 Strictly Come Dancing
7.15 Robin Hood
8.15 1 vs 100
8.50 Casualty
9.40 Strictly Come Dancing

I'd bet quite a lot of money on Robin Hood starting on the 23rd though - sandwiched in between Noel Edmonds' two National Lottery shows.

The News 24 countdown is not a clock though. It is a countdown to the start of the next bulletin - it's not even a countdown to the top of the hour really. I don't think we'll ever see the return of a pres clock because there are too many factors involved in the digital process that makes delays all over the place - including the delay in different receivers decoding the signal.

So why is it still fine for BBC Radio to broadcast the Greenwich Pips on all digital platforms... and on the internet where delays can be over a minute depending on connection, PC speed, etc.?

Well take a look at this:

Series 1: 8 couples
Series 2: 10 couples
Series 3: 12 couples
Series 4: 14 couples

The digital delay is a bit of a poor excuse for not having a clock. News 24 still has a countdown.

It's an extremely poor excuse they still show Big Ben on News 24 and Sky News on New Year's Eve or when there's the 2 minute silence. You don't have them saying 'we won't show Big Ben because it'll be 2 seconds out.' If you're watching on digital you won't be watching real time, there'll be a short delay which is minimal.

I can't stand it when this argument is used to say why there isn't a clock.

The digital delay issue is so obviously just an excuse for getting rid of clocks, used by TV executives who think they're old fashioned.

Aah right thanks. I'll say then Strictly Come Dancing starts on September 30th, finishing on 16th December. And i don't know when Robin Hood starts, obviously in October but maybe a bit later so it runs into January. I doubt they'll have an Xmas special.

The thing I'm most surprised about at the moment with the new idents is that there has been no details mentioned at all about content. I would have expected some sort of detail considering they are about a month away.

As for the launch date I have to agree, a relaunch this weekend seems improbable as there aren't any high profile programmes on apart from Test The Nation and the return of Dalziel and Pascoe. I notice that most of this discussion presumes they are relaunching on a Saturday evening and though this is probably the most high profile time (especially with all of the Christmas idents launching at this time as well) I was wondering what is the basis of this expectation? Earlier posters are probably right with it launching ahead of Strictly Come Dancing IMO.

Off topic there were a few automation problems after Breakfast today: Breakfast ended as usual then cut to a Today promo, which went out announcerless. An Eastenders trail followed and then halfway through cut back to the Breakfast studio (still with the same camera, now lowered back to floor level, and Breakfast (C) graphic keyed over) where Bill and Susanna were talking to the guest and what looked like the floor manager coming onto set. This then cut to a promo for Equator on BBC Two and after a couple of seconds cut back to the studio where the guest had now left, the production team were entering the floor space and Bill and Susanna were unplugging microphones etc. A cut to a static Tonight menu followed before returning to the Breakfast studio where Susanna left over to where the newsdesk was and then, after a flicker of the screens on the background, a full screen still of Breakfast (an orange background and white BBC Breakfast used on the studio background quite regularly) appeared, still with the Breakfast endcap keyed over. The red Tonight screen changed with the Breakfast still quite a few times before crashing midaway through the Salsa ident, one final cut back to the Breakfast still and then straight into To Buy Or Not To Buy.
No Duncan Newmarch in sight (a bit of a shame really considering his excellent anno at 06.00 this morning where he changed his BBC One calendar to reveal, disappointingly, a picture of Dale Winton), and no apology in later junctions.

There was an apology over the end of To Buy or Not to Buy.
