I loved the computerised globe idents it freed up the globe and put it an all manner of new situations.

It wasn't just the ones that came in 2000 that were obviously computer generated, so was the balloon hovering around Blackpool Tower, The Angel Of The North, the Scottish Armadillo Building and the Severn Bridge in Wales. I loved bungee as it was so unexpected.

Here's something from Brand Republic about it (unfortunately I'm not a subscriber so I can't show the rest of the article).

CRAFT SECRETS: BBC IDENTS - How 3D equipment gave the BBC balloon a facelift...

How do you get a giant hot air balloon to float past Blackpool Tower at the right time or hover over St Michael’s Mount at the right speed?

How do you get a giant hot air balloon to float past Blackpool Tower at the right time or hover over St Michael’s Mount at the right speed? Simple. Create the entire scene using the most advanced computer visualisation equipment available. This is how the post-production house, SVC, produced the latest BBC idents. The balloon itself was not an original concept - it was used for earlier idents that were developed through Lambie-Nairn. However, the fact that the balloon would now be computer-generated marked a breakthrough. The balloon and the location shots needed to be filmed separately. And as the balloon was not going to be on location, it was necessary to work out before the shoot exactly which footage...

I guess some other technology was used to create the very unconvincing idents for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Possibly Paint.

Nice closedown ident. At last presentation are having a bit of fun and giving us something a bit different to the usual - it's a shame we haven't had it like this for a while.

Something I noticed on analogue this evening...

If your TV displays a teletext identifier when channels are changed (ie. "ITV1 Westcountry"), you might be able to find out which BBC1 ident is next before it comes on. How?

Occasionally the identifier on BBC1 displays the name of the current programme rather than the service ID ("BBC ONE"). When I switched to BBC1 during a junction, instead of BBC ONE coming up in the teletext line it said "ST MAASAI +6". Sure enough, Maasai was the symbol into The Real Story.

I'm guessing the teletext info bar sources from Presfax...?

I'm so gald you mentioned that. I noticed this on a few occasions and thought my signal must be weak. the only problem with these IDs is when I switch to 3 on analogue. The channel is supposed to be ITV1 Yorkshire, but it still says Yorkshire Television, which was dropped nearly four years ago. Also in the morning, when I tune to 3 on analogue, I get GMTV. I thought at first that this was a fault because that is the name of the programme, but it happens every single morning.

No. It is the name of the station. GMTV's contract gets them the entire network in the morning. Then other local companies' contracts give them local network conacts afterwards, with Teletext Limited's contract lasting allday, for the text contract.

So the station name becomes GMTV (and the local day-provider supplying regional news, as progammes on GMTV [I think]) --> your local day-time provider, (with ITN providing network news - as programmes), . teletext ltd running the text service parrell over each regions' two stations.

No, it'll come straight from the playout computer rather than via presfax

Im purely speculating here, but next Saturday 2nd September would be a good day to launch a new look. Saturday is the first day of the week in tv world while September means the launch of the autumn season. That day they have and England Euro 2008 qualifier, then that week new Dalziel and Pascoe, Who Do You think you are?, Test the Nation, A Question of Sport, new comedy dramas etc.

If anyone did, I think they'd post it. Patience is not just a card game.
