When you take a look at the balloon in the year 2000, the new 'people' idents were hardly slow. In fact, a couple of these idents included people dancing outside, and skateboarders performing tricks - activities that more or less got revisited in the current look. Another of the new idents at the time featured a bloke bungee jumping from the balloon; how is that 'slow'?
I personally thought that the new wave that came in 2000 consisting of Market, Carnival, Skateboard and Bungee made the whole balloon brand tacky and unrealistic. I wanted the majestic views that we had before. Who was going to bunjee jump of a balloon in the first place!

While I never really disapproved of the additions in 2000, I tend to agree with you that the previous lot were better in their style and lovely backdrops.

This is true! The ident itself looked a bit odd to me, maybe the elements were put together on a computer anyway (as was the case with a number of others) but I'm not sure of that by any means.
I loved the computerised globe idents it freed up the globe and put it an all manner of new situations.
It wasn't just the ones that came in 2000 that were obviously computer generated, so was the balloon hovering around Blackpool Tower, The Angel Of The North, the Scottish Armadillo Building and the Severn Bridge in Wales. I loved bungee as it was so unexpected.
Here's something from Brand Republic about it (unfortunately I'm not a subscriber so I can't show the rest of the article).
CRAFT SECRETS: BBC IDENTS - How 3D equipment gave the BBC balloon a facelift...

How do you get a giant hot air balloon to float past Blackpool Tower at the right time or hover over St Michael’s Mount at the right speed?
How do you get a giant hot air balloon to float past Blackpool Tower at the right time or hover over St Michael’s Mount at the right speed? Simple. Create the entire scene using the most advanced computer visualisation equipment available. This is how the post-production house, SVC, produced the latest BBC idents. The balloon itself was not an original concept - it was used for earlier idents that were developed through Lambie-Nairn. However, the fact that the balloon would now be computer-generated marked a breakthrough. The balloon and the location shots needed to be filmed separately. And as the balloon was not going to be on location, it was necessary to work out before the shoot exactly which footage...
I can also admit that I was scared of the BBC2 idents 1991-2001 .
I was scared of them too - especially the older ones "Blade", "Silk", "Neon Light" and "Crystal Ball" , and they still send a shiver up my spine. I was also terrified of those video company idents, such as Castle Video and Pickwick, but the worst must have been the Thames Video ident (on this video somewhere).

I still get shivers looking at the BBC2 logos but I don't remember that Thames video ident. But last spring I was given a Mr Bean video with a gold Thames video ident with music from 1991-2. I remember Pickwick though I never liked watching the ident as I found it strange but I perked up when I saw Thomas the Tank Engine in it.
Loved that announcement - thought it was great. Pity they aren't given "free rein" to do that more often like they seem to be able to on the Sky 1-3 channels
