PS - Has this changed to the scariest things on TV thread?

I suppose at least it's a broader discussion than the usual 'scariest ident' thread which pops up about every three months on here.

Just out of interest, does my link above to the old clip of the six o'clock news work?

It does thanks! Quite funny that the bulletin was presented by Anna Ford and Andrew Harvey but all the headlines and the first story where all read out by Anna! Im sure i didnt think anything of it then - but seems rather odd now.

Didn't see a point in starting a new thread but we've just had two silent idents in a row on BBC ONE - Acrobats into the news and Tumbler into The Last Castle were both without the backing music.

Same happened earlier on BBC Two into Dragon's Den.

I'm sure it must have seemed rather odd then since when it was launched in the 80s Sue Lawley and Nicholas Witchell used to share the headlines then (also on the Nine O'Clock News which was double-headed during the same period).

It does seem strange now. The second presenter would not speak until after the first report, and in the mean time just sit there like a lemon.

I hear the designers have come up with an amazing idea of having people dressed up as hot air balloons coming across the screen dancing and then forming up in a number one at the end (in the style of the old Halifax ads where people made up shapes)....That was a joke before anyone gets upset with me! The BBC had something good, axed it and replaced it with dumbed down junk. I dread to think what the new idents will look like. Why couldn't they have just developed the balloon back in 2002 with an upbeat version? I never understood the accusation that the balloon was imperialistic - how is a reworked version of the globe showcasing Britain in an unoffensive way imperialistic? It was good; the dancers and red box aren't. I hate the box logos - the lettering in the BBC One box looks out of proportion somehow, and is just plain and unsophisticated, but no doubt they'll be sticking to the red box - the relaunched idents on BBC Four kept their box, so I can't see BBC One going off in another direction, which is a shame because after the poor performance of the dancers, they do need something quite radical, but thank goodness we're getting something at least!

Oh, sorry to divert the discussion!

I still fail to see why Lorraine Heggessy thought the balloon was slow and distant.

When you take a look at the balloon in the year 2000, the new 'people' idents were hardly slow. In fact, a couple of these idents included people dancing outside, and skateboarders performing tricks - activities that more or less got revisited in the current look. Another of the new idents at the time featured a bloke bungee jumping from the balloon; how is that 'slow'?

The balloon was the strong icon that linked all the set together; something that is missing from the current lot, leaving the identity now weak and unsure of itself.

The set could have easily been made more vibrant by adding more lively scenes with upbeat soundtracks, and phasing out some of the more 'serene' locations.

Ok, we're just being spoilt now - and by Network!

BBC One have just gone to an early close with Duncan Newmarch and a cameo of Becky Wright who's on Two right now. Superb stuff.

Someone should ask Becky and her director to do an integrated menu on Two at 1.10 Wink
