Interestingly the music for the new BBC1 idents will be fine to use and Imran Hanif who composed the music will get a fee from the Performing Rights Society everytime they are played. Is this standard practice for music to most TV idents thathas been especially composed? I know the guy that did the Channel 4 music for the original '4' idents was paid everytime it was used.

Yes - all music played has to be paid for each time it is used. It's PRS rules - it applies to jingles on radio, idents on TV, music on promos, even someone singing Happy Birthday.

The new idents will take affect as of tommorrow morning...most likely 10am.

Does this refer to the London/South East region or Northern Ireland?

And any idea how long we should set it for?
