This reminds me of an interview that was part of the documentary about the Radiophonic Worshop (broadcast on BBC Four about a year ago). The person being interviewed believed that the most creatively inspired work is produced when avaliable technology is not quite able to fulfil the creative wishes of the artist. This does seem to hold quite a lot of truth when applied to tv presentation. Think for instance of the idents, titles and promo designs of the late 80's and early 90's, when 3d computer grapics technology had just become advanced enough to create complex three dimensional titles etc. The designers really were forced to work hard to translate a concept into reality.

My therory on way Idents now days are dull, is because we have loads of technology to make them now days, but 15 years ago they were still pretty new technology so when they made them (in the past) they had more effort to it, now we've just run out of ideas.

That sums it up quite nicely.
It needs to be dramatic to have impact, and have one memorable icon, not some bunch of bland or random shots where you cannot pick out one specific object in the idents themselves that ties them all together.
This is the reason why ITV1 in particular is so ruddy poor.
This is also the reason why, in that photo taken for the Ready Steady Cook Announcer special, Phil Vowells had to hold the BBC ONE logo!
Try to imagine the ITV and BBC ONE idents 'on their own' without any logo overlaying the sequences, and you can see how silly they'd look, particularly in ITV1's case.
If you do the same with the balloon, it doesn't suffer as badly, because it's a symbol that represented the channel just as well as any logo at the bottom of the screen could, if not better. And as for BBC TWO, the idents that don't need the logo during the animation (especially with the reappearances of the Xmas 2000 and Predator/Venus Fly Trap) are worsened by the presence of it, and thus would probably benefit from having the logo removed -- the complete opposite of ITV1.

I hope that some kind of dramatic symbol is used.. with some dramatic music. Like the baloons. I doubt it though. I think Buzzy bee seem very cheep, and just churn out any old rubbish. Something original would be nice. Please no people involved. *itv*

I don't see what's wrong with an update of the globe- 1 ident- and a refresh of other presentation each season.
It's not trendy enough, though, which makes it too radical.

The problem with Busy Bee is there only seems to be one idea at a time on how to design logos. Split boxes and two tone are the in thing, ie UKTV & ITV it all looks the same because no body dare do anything different. Thats what happens when you have a climate of fear where everyone wonders if they will have a job tomorrow

You seem to be complaining about the logos used on idents these days, but remember the bbc logo on the balloon idents, the 1 in the glassy globe, and the bbc twos, were all monotoned and simple, more so than the current ITV and BBC logos as they now use colours and shapes.
The Idents have no defining symbol, and thats whats wrong. Today it seems to be about conveying a mood or feeling, which in itself is laudable and seems a good idea, however its the approach which is simple and too obvious.
"we want to show that the programme is happy so lets show people happy" or "this show is serious so lets have people dancing slowly"
Channel 4 merges its logo with a feeling which isnt obvious, but definatly has a mood. Channel 5 does it obviously, with the words, but that substitues the logo so it feels good.
The globe was a symbol, but it conveyed no emotion, or any link with its audience, now describing it like that makes it sound negative, but visually its a stronger image.
Now channel 4 does it right, and five also does it good, bbc two is still good, itv 1 and bbc one are pretty poor.

I was looking for any news about the new BBC1 idents and found this interesting article. It seems the balloon had it's critics.

If they're anywhere near as creative and brilliant as what Channel 4 are doing now I'll be pleased.

The BBC's Annual Report has been released; certainly worth a read, particularly the stats: http://www.bbcgovernors.co.uk/annreport/report06/17.broadcastingfacts.pdf
