These new idents are amongst the worst idents from anywhere in the world, ever. They are so un-BBC like that it makes it look like some el-cheapo local TV channel.

I would say they make a great argument for bringing back the clock as a introduction to the news and other serious programmes.

The clock wouldn't be accurate because of digital delay, though that doesn't seem to stop BBC Radio continuing to use the pips.

Or indeed clocks on breakfast TV or news channels. Digital delay will probably be no greater than non radio controlled clocks in people's houses.

Indeed, by the way, pay attention, most of these points have already been made in here about 70 pages back. Very Happy
Probably the most accurate clock you'll find in most homes now will be that on a smart phone, tablet, or computer, but no one outside of this forum is going to worry the TV station clock doesn't match

I read that the clock was never accurate anyway, it ran a second fast so it hit the top of the hour at xx:59:59 so that the news started bang on xy:00:00

What would be nice would be an ident that was backtimed and had a definite finish - a bit like the News Channel countdown sequence - that could be used into programmes with a clear start time like the news.

Hey! I'm not worrying about it either, I'd love to see the clock back. I thought 'digital delay' was one of the reasons given for dropping the clock.

Half a second I think ? the principle being that you'd see the second hand hit the top, then cut to the news.

70 pages!? It's been discussed again and again every few months since TV Forum started

BBC1 NI showed one with both MG & GN tugging on the star, this afternoon.

It's a case for killing idents off altogether and adopting the policy from other countries of just crashing right into the next programme. If the best we're offered is BBC's disasters, or Channel 4 refusing to actually point out what channel you're watching, what exactly is the point?

Or just have a 5 second ident and be done with it...

See this is what I was getting at pages back. We hold on to this nostalgic view of TV pres and maybe we shouldn't? Maybe things are changing a bit with all the multichannels we have now and online viewing etc. Quite why I need to see an ident before a programme on iPlayer I've no idea.

I'm as nerdy as they come about pres but I'm also a realist who can see that things do change.

Maybe we are heading for the way the rest of the world does it.

Well, that's every childhood memory of setting my Casio F-91W to the 9 O'Clock News ruined.
