Yeah, and I want to talk about this, because I genuinely believe that CGI/Symbol idents are dead in this day and age. Commentators including the sainted Applemask often pine for them to come back, and I believe it comes from the same piece of nostalgia in our brains that wants regional frontcaps back: it's not going to happen, shut up about it, let's move on.
However, I also think that real people crap like what we have been given are also rubbish. We've seen the reactions to them from various channels over the years and they don't seem to do well.
So... something in the middle... something that's real world but also with effects and a bit of CGI... perhaps those Channel 4 idents were actually good after all...
I still think there's a place for symbol idents, provided they're done properly. It doesn't all have to be CGI, but having a central symbol creates a strong ident package. I don't see why everything has to be real world, and if it has to be, don't include people as any shots of people look embarrassing.
I think it was a case of people hating losing the globe/balloons more than hating the Rhythm & Movement idents. As far as pres-fans were concerned they came during an era where "people idents" were en vogue. Pres-fans generally prefer a bit of CGI.

Is it meant to sound like a horror movie? Either that or I'm playing the wrong notes.
Play the notes again - and then make this sound effect with your voice as you play - "Mwah, mwah, mwwahhh!"
Then you'll know what I'm getting at!!
I really don't have a clue. Still awfully played by me. Perhaps a picture with some numbers on might help?
Although, I did manage to play the BBC One Jingle from 2006-2017! It's C#, B and E.
If I was one of those people asked to stand in the sea, stare gormlessly into infinity, and then turn around...waiting for a "it's in the can, it's a wrap!" - I would have said something along the lines of "Hey, what sort of idea is this for an ident???". Others would join....in an example of showing oneness!!
Maybe an idea for an ident is an ident being filmed, with everyone in the ident complaining how **** it is - followed by that 3 note sting you hear in comedies or films when something goes wrong, or you hit a nail into your finger.
It is something like C, B, B Flat. Play those notes on any keyboard or piano and you will know what I am referring to.
That would provide the jingle grabbing grabbing part of the ident!!

People hated the Rhythm and Movement idents
How do you conclude that? I liked them, many liked them.
As did I, but going by other comments on here that said the same pretty much, either by posters on here or links to websites where people complained about them. Didn't POV have to field complaints about them too?
Clearly the BBC weren't keen on them considering they lasted so short a length of time compared to other ident sets.
But surely you're aware that one cannot form an accurate conclusion based on what people say online because it's always going to be skewed negatively, as people are much more likely to make a comment if they disapprove of something, as opposed to approving.

Or you know... the fact that the regional symbols are pre-recorded and someone accidentally picked the wrong one.

The Midlands voiceover man didn't even know what time it was last night, stating it was 6 o'clock when it was 10 o'clock!!
That's how much it is infuriating these continuity guys!!!

as some of you know, i dabble in photography and whilst i'd heard of martin parr, his style was never really my cup of tea. i've never really "got" street photography with pictures of people standing near bins holding morrisons carrier bags or next to a door with a fire exit sign looming large in the background/
but it got me thinking... i had seen something similar.... check out this link here:
https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2008/nov/01/photography-martin-parr
this project is almost exactly the same with what he's been comissioned to do by the beeb. and... indeed it looks almost the same. wonky, awkwardly cropped, flat images, some out of focus/blurry (eg the newcastle one) with most look busy and cluttered.
i really do think he did indeed just have an afternoon drive with his camcorder... the next 18 idents don't look that promising....

You're playing all the right notes. But not necessarily in the right order.

What I find even more heartwarming about that is they gave the last "word" to the ident that was hardly ever shown. If they had that same mindset, they would've probably ran the full pre-edit Circles idents and ended on Moon. But yeah... that wasn't going to happen, was it?
These were an absolute masterpiece! I hadn't realised until the "oneness" idents were revealed...

The Rhythm and Movement bunch wasn't without its problems (which become small compared to the current set), but some of the idents were very good, such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMlchgdrhDQ
EDIT: To be fair its "problems" more than "problems" was mainly it coming after the Balloons era..

I'm somewhere in the middle on this.
As has been said, the reason most didn't like the R&M idents is likely because of the balloon package they replaced. If they replaced a God awful package like this one, everyone would be celebrating.
The balloon idents were evolving to include people in its idents and I think this is where the BBC should be going in a new package. A symbol interacting with its audience.

The hippos lasted 10 years!
Why does everyone keep singling out the Hippos? They weren't even the best of the last set of idents yet somehow in the public mind the Oneness idents have replaced the hippos... just the hippos

I think perhaps the hippos were the most memorable of all the 'circle' idents for the majority of people.
Also, how they managed to get hippos to swim in a circle like that, I'll never know...
