I will hand it to Channel 4, the production values are for the most part high and the surrounding presentation is pretty good, but I feel the concept behind the idents isn't mainstream enough to resonate with many people. Modern art's fine in Tate but on a major TV channel I'm not so sure.

Channel 4's not supposed to be mainstream. It's arguable whether or not it actually is, but I'm sure that promoting the idea that the channel is creative, edgy and a bit left-field would've been part of the thinking behind the idents and they seem to have succeeded there.

Whereas the creative thinking behind the BBC idents seems to have been done by someone whilst they were sitting on the loo having a fag in Broadcasting House one afternoon...

S4C have arguably had their wings clipped far more than the BBC under this government yet they came up with idents like these by comparison:

Just simple ideas well executed, with a distinctive soundtrack common across the idents and prominent logo. It's hardly a classic ident but in comparison to what BBC1 has churned out over the last couple of years it's a spectacular masterpiece.

EDIT: This might be of interest - the tender document S4C put out in advance of that rebrand. The budget was £15k for the overall look plus the cost of production of the idents, of which they wanted 4-6 to launch with but a concept they could add to. I'd be surprised if any individual ident cost more than £15k - indeed they probably did the lot for that.

More on that S4C brand here - proof you can revamp a flagship channel for probably less than £100k.

I think it must have been a bit stronger than a fag. I think whoever came up with it make Cheech & Chong look sober...

Well, at least the fancy dress element would have made them more engaging to look at!

We should probably be greatful the BBC didn't film their ident in portrait.

Not sure if anyone is familiar with the work of Canadian comedian/marketing guru Nathan Fielder, but this really is like something straight out of his Comedy Central show.

Actually hoping it turns out to be.

My parents thought the idents were pictures from the 'Looney Dook' when they first saw them. They then bickered over the location...

A hopeful future News headline:

"Following the success of Oneness, the new idents created around the campaign were experimental and provided the inspiration for BBC creativity to relaunch the much loved balloon. A new red balloon, featuring the "Oneness" logo will hover over familiar local landscapes across the UK. The Oneness campaign can be strengthened when used in conjunction with the popular landscapes as British countryside, landmarks and urban areas are representative of all of us. We are proud of our recently shot group portraits and these will continue to feature as stings and stills to enhance our presentation package. Overall, the public told us they enjoyed the Oneness images and this next phase in our ident refresh will ensure the Oneness campaigns can continue to be enjoyed in 2017 and beyond."
