Truly abysmal. Even the bats wings were better idents.

It'll be interesting to see how many English regions retain Kites if they are indeed allowed to - we could at least have three decent junctions a day. And surely NI will be off to film their own at first light tomorrow - they will be embarrassed to be using these ill-conceived attempts.

I wonder how much notice the nations were given of the new look? Has it been sneaked through by network while national directors are on leave? It's very suspicious that the circle idents weren't given a proper farewell even by Belfast.

Will NI be allowed to deviate from the package though? It's one thing filming a Christmas ident, or changing the BBC logo at the bottom of the ident, but to withdraw idents from the main set and replace them with their own has not been done before.

Why is Kites still in use for regions? This just gets messier and messier.

The balloon launch in 1997 and BBC 2's idents were fantastic and value for money. They were streamlined and recognisable symbols of BBC 1 and 2. I think it cost £5m for the balloon package, but it was worth the money. Now we have a cheap, messy package that is a half baked rebrand that means nothing to nobody. It's very sad.

Around 4 years ago whilst on holiday, I though of an idea that BBC 1 could follow for a new symbol which was inspired by the Swiss tv idents focusing on the numeral which was shot in various locations in the confederation. Maybe the BBC should go Swiss and take something similar on.
The red fits in well with BBC one as well, with it being the primary colour of the channel for just about 20 years now.

Their sea swimmers ident is certainly more impressive... SRF have to be the polar opposite of BBC for consistency. Their original idents were created by Dunning Penny/Elley Jones. No reason BBC couldn't have done the same. They actually added to their collection of idents, always following the same theme for the many years the package aired. The ident below is from their new look, again it still follows a similar theme and doesn't feel the need to have any silly tagline or marketing babble, its just a good ident. No channels in the UK seem to be able to add to their idents and if they do they are sub par and don't match the originals. They could have retained the circles and combine it with oneness (swimming in a circle, dancing in a circle etc)

Now that is awesome!!!

Even the Good Morning Britain Introduction from TV-AM days featured some awesome images and film of people and things coming together to form the Good Morning Britain titles. They were seriously ahead of their time and I always remember them since childhood.

Even the Rhythm and Movement idents did T have to have a worst the bottom to explain what was happening - ie "BBC One Rhythm and Dance - Skateboarding in the Docks in Scotland".

Other idents the BBC could come up with for the OneMess idea could be:-
1. Someone being sick in a plane and then someone handing them a paperbag and someone else wiping the seat - in a show of oneness.
2. Men entering the gents toilets and using the urinals together - as a show of oneness.
3. People going into a lift, someone farting and then others wafting the smell away - as a feeling of togetherness.

These are banal ideas but nothing more banal than what we have already seen.

Asa - at least I think these new idents have brought the forum together - new and old - as a show of Oneness!!

The comparison to SF1's ident says all you need to know about the BBC's jaded, cynical, depressing view of modern Britain. The Swiss get a slick, stylised and aspirational depiction of young fit athletic swimmers, we get an eyeful of moobs and sagging white bits... I accept the BBC's version is more realistic, but surely idents should have something to say in funny, smart, engaging and upbeat way? Why does the BBC seem so obsessed with highlighting the depressing grime and banality of everyday life?

I really can't fathom how in just 20 years we have gone from this:

...to introducing the news with a load of flabby arses.

Is this a dream?

A clock doesn't evoke Oneness, it has 12 numbers at the deliberate exclusion of many others. No-one can engage with a clock.

I don't like the Conservative front bench either but there's no need to resort to insults Wink

It's a 20 year old clip and of course times change and it's very easy to look back at the things you've liked in the past but just look at that clip. That whole sequence of the clock, the visuals, music and the headline rundown just scream authority and trust the two things the BBC should aspire to more than anything else. It brings a tingle to the spine and a real sense of importance. How could we have serious news (which there will be over the next months) introduced by those fat arses standing in the cold sea? Disgraceful!

You also can't broadcast an accurate one these days.

We can't. Best solution (and cheap) for the lead in to the news is the NBH balcony shot, and a voice over saying, ' Now on BBC 1 the BBC News with Huw Edwards That would only be 25 years behind more or less what ITN used to do, for the first couple of years at GIR
