The swimmers are amassing to pose for a still photograph. The ident naturalistically depicts the organisation of a still photograph. Unsurprisingly, in motion and in the unpolished raw, it comes across as flat, lifeless, grey and lacking in purpose.
Television is a visual medium. Utilise it. The two revealed show no mastery, appreciation or respect of the medium for which they were produced. There is an obvious disconnect.
No pride, no fun, no magic, no imagination, no sophistication, no point. It has achieved Oneness only on this forum, which has never been more united, without descending into overreaction theatre.
What is remarkable about the package is how underwhelmed the BBC seem to be themselves. A BBC Wales announcer made a sarcastic comment about how he preferred the balloon, and the network announcer sounded like he couldn't believe what he was saying. Their Twitter account has made no mention of the rebrand and the horrible red box remains on there. Not many broadcasters have such a low key rebrand.
All is not lost! - The "Window on the World" BBC TWO idents were eventually withdrawn, and we got back those lovely ones from the 1990s, using the excuse that it was an anniversary.
It can happen with BBC One, we just have to invent an excuse for them to backtrack without losing face.
I was so underwhelmed by the main Christmas idents but they are masterpieces compared to the new look - at least they had a common concept throughout the set, even if it wasn't quite executed to the standards we expect.
As you say though the Christmas Day ones were just a simple concept executed very well - idents don't have to be complicated, they just have to be well done. The swimmers ident just make no sense - why are they there? If they were stopping to look at camera even just to say "This is BBC One" it might make a big of sense, but no. There is no point.
Agreed. I know I sound like a broken record but why are gormless idiots breaking off from swimming to stare at me and then walk back into the water?
It's totally rubbish. How does it say "oneness" and coming together (or whatever it's meant to be)? It communicates nothing other than the art of acting oddly.
The only redeeming feature of zumba is that the people are actually doing something (in a bland, random fashion).
Repeat repeat repeat: HOW did these make it to air? They beggar belief on absolutely all levels. The worst part is we're probably stuck with this rubbish until the next Charter Renewal at least.
It's been bugging me for the last 24 hours what these 'slice of real life' idents remind me of, especially the swimmers one. It's just come to me... they are the modern day equivalent of those haunting sepia dead-behind-the-eyes 'slice of real life' portraits that the Victorians were so fond of taking. You know, the grim and desolate looking ones that you feel absolutely no connection to, or warmth or energy from, and are actually quite creepy.

Yesterday was BBC's 90th Anniversary. They could bring back the balloon and include a BBC at 90 logo under the BBC One?
Truly abysmal. Even the bats wings were better idents.
It'll be interesting to see how many English regions retain Kites if they are indeed allowed to - we could at least have three decent junctions a day. And surely NI will be off to film their own at first light tomorrow - they will be embarrassed to be using these ill-conceived attempts.
I wonder how much notice the nations were given of the new look? Has it been sneaked through by network while national directors are on leave? It's very suspicious that the circle idents weren't given a proper farewell even by Belfast.

I think "Kites" is only retained for obits. But of course, I could be wrong.

Its shameful really. They have a huge concern with keeping this s***e fresh, as we're stuck with these two 'idents' for some time, and for them to add a few more POS idents sporadically. The BBC haven't even made much mention aside from a generic PA article on the 'idents'. That tells you how ashamed they are. And it's astonishing to see that BBC 'Creative' have utterly f***ed up on their first refresh of a channel.
As for Oneness, they've done a good job of eradicating the personality of the brand - the novelty of Oneness is running out. And fast.

Just to say there are 4 swimmer stings, and at least two dancer stings. Hopeful this wont get lost.

I hadn't made that connection. Maybe something more like this would have worked better?
You could have a series of them, using different kind of cameras, selfie sticks, professional photographers, etc as a way of showing "real life scenes".
