Maybe they need to bring back the Windows ident.

The entire Oneness package definitely seems unsuitable right now. But what can they do about it?

Bring the circles back? They might seem quite fresh again after three years off air. Plus the BBC One logo hasn't changed, so no need to alter the rest of the presentation package.

And we already have a precedent for bringing back old idents...

Never thought I'd be one of those "bring back the balloon!!!1!" people, but slap the current BBC One logo on the bottom and it could be a rather calming, reassuring presence right now.

Maybe avoid the one with people playing football, though.

The theme of them has never been more relevant, but everyone's standing too close together now! Very Happy

It needs one of people sanding apart with the caption 'Social Distancers, Wrexham'

That would be so cool!! However, it goes against the tagline of Oneness and it would mean all of the idents would have to Social Distances - in different parts of the country.

The idents are totally unsuitable now. Especially as in other BBC programmes, the presenters are sitting further apart, there is no audience or people off the street are being interviewed with long microphones.

They should be taken off air without delay - as they are sending out completely the wrong message to everyone.

Indeed. All very trivial, but a good distraction to discuss - what sort of tone should the national broadcaster be projecting in its presentation?

I set a compilation of the Balloon idents away on the big telly the other week. Those visuals and soundtracks have held up extremely well. Authoritative, reassuring, calming, uplifting - all words that sprang to mind.

In the opposite direction, I think a selection of the more fantastical and escapist Circles would work too, and would still feel familiar to the audience.

Especially with the original "Helicopter" ident for news. Can't get much more isolated than that setting.

I agree. I literally just went and watched some balloon idents and just felt relaxed and uplifted. They're not unsuitably jovial, but welcoming enough to lift everyone's spirits. Wouldn't it be great if they were leading into the news, helping people stay calm. Seeing Mountain Rescue Volunteers reminds me how bleak a situation this is and just makes me feel depressed.

The circles would be good too, something uplifting and fun - though something like 'petals' and 'football' might be slightly inappropriate given current circumstances. So yeah, something more cheerful would be great.

Oneness should definitely be reconsidered. Even if they simply show the Mountain Rescue generic ident, it just doesn't feel right and it's even more drab with the whole pandemic.

I definitely agree with bringing back the circles or at a stretch, the balloon, but I definitely think they should create a much better package which doesn't completely contrast to certain climates in society.

I honestly think the BBC has bigger priorities at the moment than changing BBC One's idents.

Even the thickest viewer will realise that they were recorded before the Coronavirus outbreak, and nobody will take them as a message to go and stand really close to other people.

Please folks, let's get a sense of reality and perspective.

Not even a global pandemic is going to get rid of these idents. They understandably have bigger fish to fry than doing anything major with the presentation but maybe it's an opportunity to be a bit more liberal with the 'generic' ident.

Given the logo and colour scheme is the same, and the Oneness scenes aren't used outside of idents/blips/holding slide, it wouldn't be beyond the realms of difficultly to revert to the previous package, but yeah, wishful thinking.

Here's a nice, simple and sincere closedown announcement from last night...

Considering the credits they came up with for the midweek Coronavirus report were better than anything I've seen for years sending their graphic designers home with the task to have a suitable replacement package, which would have to be graphics based, would probably see them come up with something far better than something that goes through 19 internal BBC meetings.

They have a ready to use set of Circle or Balloon idents that can be easily implemented. I understand that no-one in their right mind would view a BBC1 Mountain Rescue ident and think - right, I'm going to stand in close proximity to people in the street. However, now that leisure centres/gyms etc have been instructed to close, idents such as Ten Pin Bowlers and Wheelchair Rugby Players at a leisure centre, seem to be in completely poor taste and sending out the wrong message, both in terms of social distancing and locations where to gather.

As BBC1 is the national channel, it should portray the right image for the nation. It doesn't seem right that presenters are sitting far apart and Skype/long microphones being used for interviews (a bit extreme to say the least) if the programmes in question are preceded by these current Oneness idents.

- Sausage Dog Walkers which just played out is acceptable as they are standing approx 1 metre apart. Still a bit naff though.
