BBC Oneness - idents and presentation

There's no question that the circle idents weren't as good after they had been edited, and that the package looked pretty tired at the end.

But they *were* good to begin with, and they *did* give BBC1 a proper identity (at least at first). And they weren't anywhere near as hated as Oneness - or, indeed, the Rhythm and Movement idents they replaced.

A case could be made that the Rhythm and Movement idents were even more "disastrous" than the circles - yet they too gave BBC1 a proper identity (if not necessarily the *right* identity), and they lasted longer than the balloon (just over two weeks longer, admittedly, but longer all the same). And not all the idents were bad - Skateboarders was certainly more liked than hated, while Ballet was underused through no fault of its own.

A case could even be made that Channel 4's own circle idents were even more "disastrous" than BBC1's - they didn't even last three years, and they were generally hated (although to be fair, *anything* that replaced the blocks wasn't going to get quite as much love). There was even a failed attempt to relaunch the package:

Didn't see a sting. But did catch the ident:

Sound issues from the start, quite glitchy, a minute or so of the breakdown caption and then an episode of Fake Britain as backup. They've been running slightly late as a result.

On this, my mother remarked "I haven't seen this happen in a long time!"

They only caught up by dropping all the trails between 'The Great Cheese Race' and 'Who Do You Think You Are?'.

Which begs the question, are recorded shows played out locally by the Nations or do they join the Network? If so I'm guessing the controllers had to start recording EastEnders so they could join it from the start.

According to the schedule on the BBC website, X-Ray wasn't scheduled for this evening?

They get a clean feed of all the programmes as they go out on network. Clean as in the direct source of the programme, be that a server port or OS line.

I'm pretty sure they don't have copies of everything and getting a file transfer at that short notice would be risky.

It could well be that they record across the network clean feed all the time anyway.

Just tried looking on iPlayer to see if I could catch it, and there's no sign of it in the schedules.

The iplayer schedule changes if they alter programmes. Because they replaced X-Ray with Fake Britain it shows the latter instead.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to route the network feed via a device capable of doing a Sky+ style live pause to delay it until they were ready?

Thanks for that, I hadn't realised they had dropped the planned programme completely, I assumed it was a filler while they fixed the issue.

I think I’ve seen possible evidence of that in the nations. On joining a programme there’s been a momentary frozen shot of first frame.
