What on Earth did "Cheryl" do to earn herself mononymity?

Get divorced alot. Hoping this goes ahead though as at least it'll keep her off The X Factor.

I'm more concerned with the fact that the BBC have actually turned to Simon Cowell.

I'm honestly surprised Cowell even considered working with them. Wouldn't his relationship with ITV be at risk with he's producing shows for their bitter rival?

Yes, because independent production companies only ever work for one channel. The BBC nowadays tend to have to go to the independents rather than develop in house, and frankly Syco need to find their next big hit themselves. Also possible it's already been turned down by ITV, especially with Dancing on Ice back.

Anyway seems the BBC are looking at a few dance formats - another one called Drop the Beat in development.

Why cant there come back with a new House party and cheap 30min game show like Big break?

Well Partners in Rhyme was very much the definition of cheap 30min game show.

They just waste shows like Doctor Who and Michael McIntyre by running them alongside Strictly as well when they could do just as well independently in the winter and anchor the schedules. I also don't get how they keep messing up the Generation Game - the 4 episode Mel and Sue series has been slashed to two after recording - so that tells you how well that went. Get it right though and it is the sort of show that could easily sustain a 13 week run every year.

But let's be fair, if we're talking solely about UK productions, Syco have only ever produced for ITV.

I'm confident a House Party-esque reboot will be ballsed up nowadays, and Big Break seemed to survive mainly on the chance relationship between Jim Davidson and John Virgo.

I totally agree. I thought that Mel & Sue would give it a brilliant go, but when I saw that Basil Brush was to appear on all 4 episodes I began to panic.

It goes to show that presenting and entertaining isn't easy. Ant & Dec make takeaway look easy, but logistically it must be a nightmare. Similarly Noel had the skill and wit to command the house party. Brucie was well above in a league of his own for the gen game. Am I right in thinking that it ran for more than 13 weeks in the 90's? I definitely remember it being on before and after Christmas, or did it just start late into the Autumn?

And it was looking tired by 2002, too.

Seems hard to believe, actually, that there were only 19 months between Big Break ending and Strictly beginning...

I think the final series of Jim’s Gen Game was up against the first episodes of Pop Idol so looked pretty old-fashioned by comparison.

They are missing the Lottery gameshows I think. Although some were stronger than others they did reliably hold up the schedule and fill 50 minutes throughout the year. In It to Win It is axed I believe although Who Dares Wins may still be in production?

Who Dares Wins is the only one left now.

I get the impression that the Beeb were prepared to drop *all* the Lottery game shows when they stopped televising the draws - only keeping WDW on the air because of popular demand. Otherwise, why would they keep moving the show from after Pointless Celebs to before, and back?

Millionaire Manor and This Time Tomorrow were also rubbish. And it didn't help that they replaced Winning Lines and Jet Set respectively.

1 vs 100 was great, though - it remains a shame that it was killed off by a combination of the recession and escalating production costs following the BBC-decreed move from Maidstone to Glasgow.

And AFAIK, the Beeb still haven't properly explained why they ended Secret Fortune after three series, when it still had another one or two in it...
