It’s funny though, you’d think presentation would be one of the most important things now streaming has come along with prevalent branding (e.g. on Netflix) though the main 5 channels seem to be doing the reverse of this. Feels a bit like a death wish at this point...

Yes, people tune in to see the idents, offering programming people will want to watch over what streaming services have to offer is just an afterthought Rolling Eyes

Maybe death wish was the wrong phrase (especially if I’m having eyes rolled at me, thanks for that by the way) but branding is still an important part of tv - you want it to be memorable so people almost connect with the channel, remember it etc. etc. I just find it weird how boring and unintriguing they are now. And Christ, if pres really is that unimportant then I guess we should close up shop, eh?

We could well see some new Oneness idents that were already filmed finally airing tonight.

That's shockingly bad!

It's standard Oneness fare, looks just as bad as when I saw it a month ago.

But the problem is the whole presentation across BBC TV (and radio) is like a dogs hind leg. BBC Local Radio is just awful with its imaging, my local station is still using idents and sonic IDs from 2010!

I don't know what its going to take to sort it out. Good ideas and creativity costs nothing!

BBC One is still running You've been Framed idents
BBC Two are running idents almost as old as me (and i'm 30)
BBC Four looks like it's stuck in the millenium
BBC Local Radio's imaging is stuck in the 90s
And would someone please sort out BBC Radio Two as well.

Oh and there's also the matter of some BBC regional news sets and galleries hanging on by a thread and we still can't get the regions on BBC One HD. It's a real sorry state of affairs and is so sad to see. Sad

‘We could have the drones fly up in sync or even in a sort of rhythm, that would be quite visually pleasing, right?’

‘No, one of the racers drones has ran out of battery and one guy can sort of do a backflip with his so we’re doing that’

Yes, it's bad - and it's not going to get any better. They're appallingly dull, badly executed etc etc. Another 300 pages of moans is not going to remedy the situation.

All we can do is hope that something much better replaces this - the sooner the better, obviously.

Let's not go down the path of commenting further on this tripe. It's been done to death already.

While the state of the BBC's presentation isn't good at the moment, it can be said that there is the clout and creativity to produce presentation of a decent standard. BBC One's Christmas 2017 pres was proof that BBC Creative can pull off a visual marvel. If they produced a good Christmas set, they can surely revamp the three main BBC channels.

As MMcG198 has said, at this point there is only so much we can speak about this topic. Treat Oneness like your Rhythm and Movement. It might be terrible, but good things come to those who wait...

But that being said, the end boards are all over the place and they don't seem to know what brand image they want. Is it circles, a falling 'O' or an animating Oneness ident?

I personally think they need to re-think the presentation across all the main channels, not just re-hash stuff from the past or throw anything on the air with a 'that'll do' attitude. They all need a property. As you say BBC Creative produced a decent Christmas ident package, but it doesn't seem to translate to a brand, consistency or image overhaul across the the network.

Whether anyone likes it or not BBC One, Two and Four are not just channels, they are brands but watching the idents they don't look like they're from the same family. The logos are all over the shop. Martin Lambie Nairn got it so right in 1997 but its just become terribly disjointed in 20 years as you'd expect.

I keep expecting and old prior to 1997 BBC slanted logo with coloured lines to appear at any minute because someone thinks it looks better. Laughing

BBC One Scotland's first airing of Wild Campers from this morning. I guess if it was filmed in Glencoe, then they have good reason to want it aired up there as soon as possible:-

Between BBC One and Two, different endboards are used depending on how important or hyped up the programme is. If you have a drama like McMafia on BBC One - the falling 'O' is used, whereas stuff like Death in Paradise is given the less important red endboards. Same goes with Two, but any consistency with the brand is thrown away.

It seems as though the basic foundations of BBC One and Two's pres packages are indeed beyond their sell-by date. Whatever we get next, will be a large radical shift for BBC pres.

You see, I don't think that'll be the case. The BBC seems to like recycling things from the past, namely old idents from the 80s or 90s. They need to stop harking on back to the past, we've moved on. You don't see ITV doing it. They don't start running 1994 regional idents on their flagship channel into some cult programme. Yes, it maybe nice for the geeks on here but its terribly old fashioned. Things, times, attitudes have moved on.

The BBC needs to look at its presentation and to start attracting a younger audience who will be loyal to the services for years to come. Their channels need a fresh, sharp, modern and crisp look to keep up to date with today's diverse programming on the network, with up to date logos and look like channels built in 2018 and not 1991, in the case of BBC Two. And above all, they need consistency.

In short - they need to look to the future, not the past, not 1991 or indeed the present.
