One thing I wondered about the Strictly final on Saturday: At the start they had a massive LED screen in front of the stage as part of the opening number, which you then saw being hoisted up at the end of the dance so you could see the orchestra during the 'Live, from the BBC'. bit where they introduce Tess and Claudia.

There would have been no opportunity to take the screen down during the show, so did they really leave it hanging in mid-air for two hours? I appreciate the chances of it collapsing to the ground are minimal, but even so I'd have thought suspending a massive screen above the ground for hours on end wouldn't be the best thing to do? Was the start perhaps pre-recorded?

I wouldn't consider it to be that much of a problem - it's not that uncommon for many music concerts to have much larger screens hanging and even moving into different positions for several hours during a show. The start was definitely prerecorded as the confetti that was released at the end of the dance had mysteriously disappeared from the floor when Tess and Claudia came down the stairs straight afterwards.

It wouldn't be too much of an issue providing the safe working loads weren't exceeded. Plenty of heavy things are flown and suspended above people's heads, particularly in theatre. If it was done properly, it would be weighted 'cradle heavy' meaning that if the brake was to give way, it would fly upwards as opposed to crashing down on to the stage. In reality, the lighting bars would probably be on par weight wise, if not heavier than the screen.

LED screens are often hung for months at a time. A few hours is nothing!

(In an soundstage, it won't have been on any sort of counterweighted bar, it'll just be motors. Also, LED screens are always the thing which get people concerned about loadings. Lights are getting lighter (excuse the pun), while screens seem to be made of more tank armour than ever. A certain large 80s pop band are currently touring with over 9 tonnes of video wall, causing lots of headaches from what I've heard! - nobody has even mentioned the lighting)

Not going to be around very much now for the next few days, and as BBC1 Pres is my main interest I thought I'd post this here. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for another year of interesting and sometimes contrary discussion. Hoping it continues next year. I will be around for New Year's Eve but in the meantime, I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas. Bon Noel.

Merry Christmas to you too-Let's hope that by New Years Eve/Early hours of New Years Day, Oneness will be gone in it's entirety

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Oneness.

It better not be more oneness for 2018 Shocked

I REALLY like the BBC One idents for Christmas this year. They make me smile and laugh and it's a long time since that's happened just from a 5 second ident.

The 2 minute promotional film is nice and the production quality is amazing. I chuckle when Dad does the "No" hand gesture to copying the "head-flip" of his daughter in the fantasy stage sequence. Laughing

However, I liked the music, so I googled it and got the full version which is actually a very sad song about the loss of someone special. The accompanying video is just as tear-jerking as the BBC animated delight. Crying or Very sad

I'm sure this has already been posted.

Does anyone have any insider information about new BBC1 idents for 2018? Has anyone out there taken part in any filming for any idents, or are they going to be computer generated? Or will Oneness return for ANOTHER year? Will we be looking at Sea Swimmers again on New Year's Day just like last year and generating 50 pages of discussion on TV Forum in 1 day, the likes of which has never been seen before?? We have seen some awesome idents I think from Ireland that someone posted earlier in the year, with a 1 forming up in the sea - which was really bold and innovative. Surely BBC1 can do something similar like this? OR, will we see the same Oneness idents with added music or recuts - or even "Oneness" changed to "Love 2018" which then forms the BBC One logo?

Personally, I'd like a much better effort from BBC1 this year, it has been very embarrassing for them in 2017. Apart from these Xmas idents which are at least palatable on the eye and the ear. BBC2 can stay as it is, I don't mind old idents or old idents added to - which were good anyway. Surely, Oneness can't continue??

Didn't someone confirm on here that we are back to Oneness on 1st January? It doesn't surprise me at all.

We know there are unused idents at least.

Martin Parr confirmed on BBC Points West that the Oneness idents will return in January.

It was naive to think they'd be gone in the new year. Typical gestation periods for new campaigns can be anything from 6 months to much longer, and are usually accompanied by an industry article announcing the project.*

I would suggest/hope anything new would be tied to the as yet unconfirmed roll out of BBC Reith on the linear channels? ...if this is even part of the plan, who knows these days.

*We only got word of Oneness in December last year, of course, but clearly this was neither as thought out nor as ambitious a campaign as we're accustomed to. We certainly wouldn't want a similar abdication of strategic thinking to sully whatever ultimately replaces it.
