I can only really echo the consensus here. Poor imagination, poor production values. It's not too difficult to make something look good on a budget (look at news and current affairs programmes).
Just had a message from a friend of mine (who is not into any of this sort of thing at all)
"Wow, that is the cheapest, shi**iest most thrown together piece of crap ident I ever did see, I find myself wondering what the opposite if creative is"
........ a rehash of the Circles look, and they'd be mostly right, but I think less people would be mad at it.
But "WHO"are mad at it?I'd say 90% of the viewing public wouldn't even notice - or care!
Give it time, wait until tonight and Twitter will be awash with "WTF is that" etc, then the tabloids will get involved, then when Points of View returns in July or whenever a suit will be forced to read a press release.
I'm cringing at how every announcement is shoehorning in a link to what is going on in the ident, "taking a dip into the new year" etc. the announcers are probably wondering what on earth they are reading out.
I guess we should have seen this coming from the recent Planet Earth 2 idents, which were essentially a logo slapped on a film clip. Both then and now there was a lack of some music/chord to link them to BBC One (which is still handy if you're not in front of the tv and want to know the programme is about to start).
At least the raw footage though was of high quality and visually interesting.
Don't tell me, the new BBC Two idents in the offing is an inflatable '2' going on travels around the UK with different people standing next to it. 😂😂 Oops, better not give them ideas.
Thats not so bad - at least they'd be something within each ident which uniquely links it to the channel it represents.
Since 1997 the BBC1 idents have always had a strong visual element linking them together along with a recognisable soundtrack. These have neither.
As our national channel and over 80 years, BBC One has consistently been the trendsetters over the years, the one which the other channels look up to.
This is one of the worst pieces of station identification I've ever seen in my life.
They're copying ITV which at least they have a unique visual style with a filmic effect and slow motion.
These are filming people and shoving a logo on top. No music, no style, no colour scheme, not even any effort with camera angles or even keeping the camera steady.
These have been created in a shoestring budget and it's painfully obvious. If the BBC really don't have the funds to create a new look then I would've much rather that they stuck with the Circles look for a little while longer.
Like many have said no music or circle object for a logo to form around makes these seem odd. If they had some light music, a range of shots and members of the groups introducing the programmes Christmas Day style I'd be less annoyed.
If any January idents were to refresh the look of the channel I'd have preferred this set to have had more idents added.
It's not all BBC Branding that's going badly recently. The recent CBBC brand is very strong in my opinion with a creative logo, good graphic and well produced people idents along with a catchy tune.
At least the ITV idents have had thought put in to them and are event specific (e.g. Back to school, bonfire night). Plus there are now several hundred, so it's hard to get bored of them.
The news article said there was 24 stills and videos, so I don't think there are 24 different idents.
Are you sure? Sounds like he's saying that he has just been to film them today (presumably doing a new year swim) and coincidently they're in the new idents
