Wow. They're absolutely terrible. I've seen better idents in The Gallery...

The PowerPoint mock gang must be proud.

You know, I think they missed a trick here; they adapted the Oneness thing, but they didn't adapt the format of those idents; that is, a shot focusing on a round thing. Think of how many things are round, for instance, like a football, a car tire, bongo drums. You could have easily taken the "daily lives of average people" and made a set where it focuses on something round. Sure, people would say that it's like a rehash of the Circles look, and they'd be mostly right, but I think less people would be mad at it.

(EDIT: Ok, so I might have worded that last part a bit awkwardly; I mean "less people would be annoyed about the new idents". Sorry if that was confusing)

At least that would have more imagination!

But "WHO"are mad at it?I'd say 90% of the viewing public wouldn't even notice - or care!

And continue to make the circles fresh.
I find it funny and amusing that Charlotte Moore's damage control claims that are new set makes BBC ONE relevant to a wide audience and evolving in creativity, yet there's f**k all in them. At all.

Well these new idents make ITV's, C4's and C5's look incredible.
What on earth were BBC thinking? It looks like next to no effort went into creating these. At least with the Christmas Day idents with members of the public introducing shows, it looked like a bit of thought went into them.

Do we know if these new idents are for good, or are they like the 'Love...' idents and just for the start of the year?

The article suggests we're in for the long haul with these - Parr goes on about specific idents to introduce rugby and Wimbledon.

Seriously shameful, shameful presentation. Heads should roll for this.

I think we should stop getting so upset over what is technically a10 second film that says "Now on BBC One, it's EastEnders". Budget constraints clearly meant that a "refresh" rather than a complete overhaul was all that was necessary. The BBC needed to refresh BBC One, but they couldn't justify spending a fortune in doing so. They are what they are. I am going to be giving them an optimistic chance.

But how many times are these going to be seen over the next few long years? These aren't reverting to Circles in a month's time. They're going to be played out hundreds of thousands of times... and yet there's no spark of imagination, no creativity, no attempt to make them aesthetically pleasing - just a camera pointing at people, a small same old BBC one logo and a tenuous "theme" of people being together. For idents that will be seen for years and are presumably intended to stand the test of time, I think viewers who pay attention to these things deserve the right to be annoyed.

I wonder how long it'll be before some makes a few parody idents. Looking at the latest set from BBC One I doubt that would be too difficult.

The concept of featuring real people in real locations around the UK in itself isn't too bad. The execution of it though is poor, and the idents feel low quality.

I guess we should have seen this coming from the recent Planet Earth 2 idents, which were essentially a logo slapped on a film clip. Both then and now there was a lack of some music/chord to link them to BBC One (which is still handy if you're not in front of the tv and want to know the programme is about to start).

Happy new year, everyone! Onwards and upwards, not the end of the world etc Smile

It sounds like the BBC were non-committal on how long they'd keep these, but Martin Parr suggests it could be long-term. Might be instructive to read that article again (on p2)

The BBC has commissioned Martin Parr, one of Britain’s leading documentary photographers, to create 24 images and short films on the theme of “oneness”.

“All they made clear to me was that they wanted groups of people with shared interests, and that some should be timed for events of the coming year,” Parr told The Sunday Times.
[...]

The subjects of other photographs and short films will include mountain rescue volunteers in the Brecon Beacons, a keep-fit class and a wheelchair rugby team.

“I gather the BBC are likely to use the rugby one at the start of the Six Nations tournament,” said Parr.

Others still to be shot include people on an allotment, a dancing class and possibly a tennis club to coincide with the Wimbledon championships.

24 idents apparently. That compares to ITV's 60-odd iirc..

Not seen Points of View or RT, but has there been any real announcement of these apart from the Times article?

Twitter isn't up in arms yet. I guess it's more likely when this 'Oneness' is appearing next to some primetime shows. Or gets reported by the usual anti-BBC crowd.

But, at the moment this place is beating Twitter on the impotent rage front, which isn't a good look. It might be more enlightening to imagine what other group pictures could be humorously branded with the words "oneness". Maybe a bunch of pigeons fighting over bread. Or the Nuremberg rally. Oh never mind.

A load of wrinkly old people standing in the sea- I think that's a parody ident by itself! Not sure how you can even parody that, it's enough of a joke already.

Don't tell me, the new BBC Two idents in the offing is an inflatable '2' going on travels around the UK with different people standing next to it. 😂😂 Oops, better not give them ideas.

With Eastenders and Sherlock showing tonight - I expect people to be angered by this.

It was a shame the Circles weren't allowed a proper send off with a little montage - or one more showing of some of the discarded idents.

Based on how cheap they look, I bet they've gone from initial idea to launch whilst the Christmas idents have been on air!
