Why couldn't they just reversion some of the idents used on Christmas day? Most were pretty none-festive specific. Absolute fail, I know its in-house, but that's no excuse!

Well these new idents make ITV's, C4's and C5's look incredible.
What on earth were BBC thinking? It looks like next to no effort went into creating these. At least with the Christmas Day idents with members of the public introducing shows, it looked like a bit of thought went into them.

Do we know if these new idents are for good, or are they like the 'Love...' idents and just for the start of the year?

The article suggests we're in for the long haul with these - Parr goes on about specific idents to introduce rugby and Wimbledon.

Seriously shameful, shameful presentation. Heads should roll for this.

I think we should stop getting so upset over what is technically a10 second film that says "Now on BBC One, it's EastEnders". Budget constraints clearly meant that a "refresh" rather than a complete overhaul was all that was necessary. The BBC needed to refresh BBC One, but they couldn't justify spending a fortune in doing so. They are what they are. I am going to be giving them an optimistic chance.

These aren't good enough to be stings, let along idents. What the hell was Charlotte Moore thinking?

Could they not have kept the 'Circle' theme going, and simply created some new, refreshed idents, using the previous style?

How much would creating new elaborate "circles" cost compared to creating 24 in-house basic films that require practically no stunt or set up?

So in reality BBC One came up with that whilst here a year ago Pip2 came up with these here.

I should have realised that a feature on Points of View or a mention in the Radio Times was the death knell for the package.

This is from the primary channel of our national broadcaster? They should be the ones raising the bar, setting the standard for quality presentation on television. If ITV's idents are Primark then BBC One's are Poundland.

I can't believe these made it to air or that they're anything other than the idents we get just for January. There is nothing to them - no theme, soundtrack or creativity at all. Look at the Salsa ident from the Rhythm era - red theme background, music, camera movement and everyone in time. Yes, it was rubbish but compared to thIs fitness one positively brilliant!

It was a shame the Circles weren't allowed a proper send off with a little montage - or one more showing of some of the discarded idents. And I guess the Obit ident is those swimmers, unless they're going to play it safe and have a reworked endboard as an alternative.

The only saving grace is that the overall presentation (logo, trails etc.) hasn't completely changed so the standard idents could very easily be brought back at any point. Let's hope so.
This post on page 2 quoting the Times says that unfortunately, they are supposed to be permanent: http://tvforum.uk/forums/post1040281#post-1040281

Good point about the obit ident though. BBC2 got flak for it in 2001, since they didn't even have one suitable for Newsnight - they ended up giving Bounce a more sombre soundtrack until a new serious ident (Invisible Walls) could be made. Rhythm and Movement got an early test too when the Queen Mother died on that package's second day (they actually used the wrong ident for the schedule change announcement, Capoeira instead of Ballet).

Nobody in the industry cares about idents anymore.

Does any television channel really need "idents" & announcements in the sense that we're used to here in the UK?

All the other presentation elements (stings/breakbumpers/menus, blah blah blah) are surely sufficient?

For example... some sort of Now/Next/Later menu (like we see at e.g. about 18:57 on weekdays) could be used to lead straight into the start of each programme.

A specific isolated "Now on <channel>, it's time for <programme>" moment doesn't seem particularly necessary IMHO.

Don't fall for the budget line. Look at their programming over Christmas and you can't say any of it was cut price - even if money was tight it never showed on screen.

In reality what they spent on the last ident set cost less than an hour of drama. Cost doesn't equal quality too - I'm sure pip2 didn't spend £1m on the set he created.

Truthfully, you're right, but I don't think it would be allowed on the BBC just yet.

I just get sad I never lived through those classic presentation years.

Well it all makes the ITV idents look far superior, doesn't it! c.f. ITV swimmers with the BBC ones.

I don't think you can blame this on budget constraints. The BBC could've given a little pay packet to a budding graphic designer who would've knocked up something neat in After Effects. My biggest gripe about the BBC is that it's lost all of its confidence. And to rebrand its flagship channel with a wide shot of a bunch of middle aged people plodding along with life is frankly depressing.
