I don't think anyone did even a half-decent studio for election 2000. NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC and Fox all had their usual ones with a bit of metal slapped around.

Remarkable, however, that despite none of them spending very much on their election studios, they still managed to make an absolute shambles of their coverage. One wonders whether they spent any money on that either.

CNN's coverage in 1996 came from the atrium of CNN Centre. Again, the coverage was fairly mediocre, but it at least looked decent.

The new ABC World News Tonight looks like it is coming out of the back of an IKEA. Awful.

Oh I saw that video from World News Tonight on BBC News 24, and a second or two, there was this cute sports presenter! Who is he?!

And to be more serious: I didn't know American television news is broadcasted in Europe, to be more precisely in the UK on News 24 and Sky News and in the rest of Europe (also in the UK I think) on CNBC Europe. Well, who has views on American news broadcasting compared to British?

I know the stories about Fox News but I've also heard that NBC, which broadcasts Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, is owned by General Electric, producer of bombers and other weaponery... That I ask myself whether they could possibly independent, in case of war for example.

As we previously stated

They will probably just do what they did in 2000; NBC modify their Dateline set for the Decision broadcasts, and CBS just use the main anchor set as normal.

Well here's how we see WNT on BBC News 24. The video shows four key parts:

1) The trailer for WNT that N24 shows after the weather at 01:29, billing the programme as next.
2) The end of N24 summary and the start of WNT, note: this is over 8 minutes after the trailer which said it was next.
3) End of part 1 of WNT, N24 headline summary, hand back to WNT for part 2.
4) End of WNT, which is immediately followed by weather.

Sometimes we get a "Recorded" bug in the top-left which is the same width as the "tower" int he bottom-left. Sometimes it's black on grey and sometimes it's further over to the right and is white on black next to a red box. It used to be the case that it was always there, but since the News 24 revamp, it doesn't always appear - last night it only appeared over the closing credits, tonight not at all.

WNTonN24.rm, 3.41Mb (right-click, 'Save As...')

Yep - I think the BBC also have to edit some stings into WNT to stitch the various bits together.

In America I believe WNT contains more than one ad break, and also carries sponsorship (or did) on some of it's stings/titles.

The BBC have to replace the sponsorship stings (as the BBC can't carry sponsored shows - only coverage of sponsored events is allowed) - and edit together sequences that are interrupted by ad breaks in the US - apart from one break in the middle that is used to provide UK headlines at 0145ish.

The Beeb have to run a long news and sports summary before showing WNT at 0138ish because the show runs for only 20mins or so once you have removed all of the commercial breaks (a good 4-8 mins shorter than a BBC One network bulletin...) and they don't want to hit the weather too early and have to play out loads of trails before the 0200 bulletin. (They can't just start the 0200 early because BBC World opt-in at the top of the hour)

noggin is right ... when the WNT/BBC deal was done I was involved in the way we would put WNT out on News 24. The programme can contain as many as 6 advert breaks - hence why in reality the news content is sometimes as little as 20 minutes. They also have sponsored stings which N24 replace with generic WNT stuff (we had a copy of the stings etc sent over from ABC in the US). Sometimes small internal edits have to be made in WNT to cope with the breaks in strange places but most of the time it works. It's only made harder if a breaking news story happens in the US when WNT is on air. Peter Jennings recorded special 'coming next' promos for News 24 when it launched.

I'm sure if you talked to the excutive producers of Nightly News and its main editor Tom Brokaw they would argue that very strongly. Most people fail to realize how large a company that GE is and how large NBC is. They dont really have any co-hesion with each other apart from being owned by GE. Why would GE risk the credibility of a major news division at the expense of some engines. At the end of the day NBC makes tons of money for GE. That would be a stupid business move on their part. NBC is widely regarded in the US a being objective and not supporting the war as highly as FNC. These is no comparison with FNC. Actually just this morning the Today programme ran an interview with Sen Kennedy who was and still is opposed to the war in Iraq. As far as making "bombers" , as you put it. GE is parts maker for engines in the helicopters the military. But I would imagine they would be dragged through the mud if they were found to be supporting the war because of the parent company that owns them. CBS news got into trouble last week because the New York TImes reported on their frontpage that they possibly paid Jacko for an interview. So the checks and balances system of the media I think would prevent a major broadcaster from taking a stance similar to that of FNC. Infact from most media reports and journalism schools in the US, FNC is widely regarded as joke. Though they may have more viewers than CNN and MSNBC, the fact remains that the viewers of cable news is tiny in comparison to the Broadcast Network newscasts. Nightly News w/ Tom Brokaw drawing over 9 million nightly. The most popular of them all for the past 10 years or so. The Fox Report draws somewhere near 1.5 mil. If you combine the numbers of all the network newscasts they smash the cable channels to pieces. In the event of major disaster the majority of Americans will turn on a broadcast network first before they will think of cable. The quality is there.

Well Chiguy, you're telling very interesting things about America's news media. Over here in The Netherlands we only have CNN International as American news source but over here some people say even CNN is too pro-American. Maybe it's because I'd like to become a newsreader someday, but I am very interested in the British and American news media.

Now, news correspondents from our Dutch television news broadcasters say 'the networks' to CBS News, Fox News, NBC News, ABC News, MSNBC, etc. So they really regard them as all-the-same. Is that so in reality? Are CBS, NBC and ABC such tendentious? And pro-American?

* What do you regard as the most reliable, neutral and independent television news broadcaster?

* What is your personal favourite and why?

* Do American news broadcasters have a clear identity or do they bring the same stories the same way?

* Are they tendentious and do they bring often only human interest stories?

Hence, I suppose, this is why BBC News 24 isn't aired until 1.30am because it takes time for the feed to come over from the US and then be edited with all the generic graphics etc?

That is one issue relevant to the transmission slot - however it is also quite a minority interest programme in comparison to Business Today and HardTalk.

The 0130-0200 slot used to carry a back half-hour of domestic news - in particular regional reports that were brought in by the UK Today team. When UK Today moved from being a News 24 simulcast to a separate show made from separate studios, and then stopped entirely, these regional packages were less available I guess...

Thanks for not being nasty about it. Most people on this forum tend to get snarky about such things. I was just trying to share. cheers

Then at least have the courtesy to acknowledge the guy who captured them, or which site you took them from.

Oh dear, tonight's break in the middle of WNT on N24 was not good:

Ugly top-right Recorded bug was present during first half. Fair enough.
Recorded bug disappears towards end of first half. OK.
Recorded bug reappears when N24 goes back to the studio and then disappears as Alistair Yates starts to speak. Hope no-one noticed.
On the headlines strap, instead of headlines, we see "2" on the smaller top row and "Recorded" on the larger lower row. It's quickly taken away. Uh-oh something's buggered.
Recorded bug reappears as the show starts. Ah, back to normal.
A presenter name aston appears as the WNT presenter starts to speak, this also reads "Recorded". Agh, we get the hint!
