ITV should bring back Shortland Street as well as having its own home-grown soap. SS was only dropped due to Charles Allen wanting ITV1 to have nothing but UK produced programmes 98% of the time on ITV1 - funny how he changed his mind after the mergers!!!!!

It didn't last very long on YTV and TTTV originally, which says a lot when a 20 year old soap, The Young Doctors, was far more popular with viewers.

Maybe if STV had kept High Road, they'd have been able to shove it back into daytime. It was very popular, certainly in some regions - there were protests I recall in the TTTV area when it was dropped.

BRING BACK CROSSROADS MK2!!!!

Bring back MKI far better wobbly sets! Laughing

Ive seen a few episodes of MK 1 on DVD and it was good, however not a patch on 70s/80s Corrie.

Yes Corrie wobbly sets and fluffed lines were just as bad as Crossroads in the 1970s.

The writing in Coronation Street was far better usually (there are some episodes of Crossroads that have very good scenes) but thats really down to the fact Coronation Street had more time in those days to write episodes, the two episodes compared to Crossroads making four a week.

But the technical quality of both soaps is pretty much the same - although Crossroads had a OB before Corrie, and was of course doing the far more risky stories that Brookside took to the further level later, while Corrie tended to be a bit more safe.

And for a show to air at 5.15pm / 6pm and 6.30pm and get 16-18 million viewers thats pretty good. If it had been shown at 7pm, it probs would have beaten Corrie more often. Looking at the old ratings, usually two episodes of Crossroads beat at least one episode of Corrie, although Corrie usually had the singular highest rating episode. So both on par really.

Still, I think Crossroads was ruined by Carlton so hasn't much chance of returning.

To be honest I don't think it was Carlton that ruined it. When Carlton brought it back, admittedly, it did have a shaky start and the 5th episode should never have been taken away from the show. By the time it went on its 6 month hiatus it was actually a very good and well produced soap - very much on par with Emmerdale and Coronation Street (remember their standards have considerably dropped since doing more than 2 episodes a week).

The people that ruined the show were the ITV channel bosses (one being Nigel J Packard of TVS Children's and CBBC fame!) of the time wanting a more fresh a very directive "Gay" type show to appeal to the minority of the community - this is where it failed. NO-ONE liked it and as such ITV got its desired effect and was able to cancel the show with people hating it rather than liking it.

Yeah I agree both soaps were probably on a par when you consider storylines, characters, acting, producton quality etc. However having watched episodes of both on the DVD releases I preferred Corrie by miles. However I have seen very limited episodes of the orginal Crossroads as I was only 7 when it was axed, my earliest memory is from the era with the opening titles with the car driving on a motorway in Birmingham to the motel. I saw nothing of Crossroads on UK Gold but have seen all of Corrie of Corrie from 1976 on Granada Plus.

Talking of the DVD's are there to be anymore releases of Crossroads? Id probabaly buy it as I did enjoy most episodes on the 2 DVD's.

They should have:

16:30pm Live with Bradley Walsh
17:30pm This new daytime soap - if it was a half hour one. (could be a repeat off 13:00pm edition Laughing ). And battle with Nieghbours ?

IMHO Neighbours would win. If ITV is ever to win the slot then you idea should be reversed and let it be the only showing of the soap - with a omnibus repeat at the weekends on ITV2.

Anyway, ITV should bring back Shortland Street as well as having its own home-grown soap. SS was only dropped due to Charles Allen wanting ITV1 to have nothing but UK produced programmes 98% of the time on ITV1 - funny how he changed his mind after the mergers!!!!!

Shortland Street was dropped because it was classed as a regional programme and ITV got rid of most of the regional slots. The ITV Network never showed it, each region could show it how they wanted and a couple of regions like STV never bothered with it at all. Westcountry never showed it at all up until 2003 when when Carlton tried to network it across their regions but it got awful viewing figures so the network wouldnt show it when the regional slots were taken away.

Crossroads Mk1 was up to Nicola Freeman taking over the Hotel
Crossroads Mk2 didn't last long and lasted up to Bomber Lancaster taking over the hotel.
Crossroads Mk3 was the shortest period and lasted until it finshed for the first time.
Crossroads Mk4 was when it returned after its 13 year hiatus
Crossroads Mk5 the "gay" version and totally disliked by ALL sections of the community.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that there's been 5 incarnations of Crossroads, not 3! Cool Albeit that the first three were one continuous run, whilst the others were seperated by a 13-year gap, then a 4/5-month (? IIRC) gap, respectively.

I'm too young to know the plot references for your Mks 1-3 above. But I assume that your Mk2 is basically when they adopted the "car advert" title sequence with piano version of the traditional theme tune, and that your Mk3 is when it was entitled "Crossroads Kings Oak"??? (did that version have a completely different piano theme tune, rather than the "proper" Crossroads theme?)

By the way, the "car advert" title sequence's endcap read "Crossroads Motel" - Was "Motel" ever officially regarded as part of the programme's name? (i.e.Did listings magazines, continuity announcements, etc, ever mention it? Or did they carry on saying just "Crossroads"?)

Crossroads Motel
Crossroads
Crossroads - Kings Oak (this is when the motel became a hotel)
Kings Oak - was to be adopted as the soaps name but never got round to it as it was given the axe
Crossroads (upon its return as a 4* hotel)

I never knew that it was originally called "Crossroads Motel "!
Was that only in the really early black-and-white days or what?
When did it first become just "Crossroads"? Confused

I also never knew that it changed from a motel to a hotel before the 21st century revived version! Embarassed

when it first started in the Granada regions it was just called Crossroads so I am presuming that it was CRossroads Motel in the few regions before then.

When "Bomber" Lancaster took it over he changed the name of the motel to "Kings Oak Country Park Hotel" hence the reason as to why the name of the soap was going to change before it got the original axe.

WRONG!

People who disliked the remake simply didn't understand it for what it was. That and the fact that when Stu was supposedly a proper Midlander - he never watch it.

It was camp, riduculous, totally OTT and to that end made it amazing.

Come on, the fight in the fountain was hilarious - I know you laughed really.

But to that end, and for your inability to recognise a programme that was different to the norm...
