I think we need to blame Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire for all this as I believe this was the very first of these interactive DVDs launched back in 2002 (or 3)

Well actually WWTBAM was released as a CD ROM...waaaay back in 2000ish.

If they could release a Blockbusters one which would allow you to play whichever side you wanted and select your own letters, that would be great (ala WeDigTV)

I wasn't. I was talking about CD-ROM games which pre-dated DVD games by a good few years.

My main problem with them is the speed. For example on the deal or no deal game, picking a box is the equivalent of moving to a different menu on a DVD, and so it takes an age to change.

The catchphrase one does look good.

There's a promo video for it on the Amazon page:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Catchphrase-Interactive-DVD/dp/B000VA3JHA/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1195251706&sr=8-1

It also includes bloopers, including the famous "Snake Charmer" catchphrase (although it looks like you get shown them at various points during gameplay, i.e. you probably can't access them from the main menu).

What's up with the Nick Weir era style DVD cover and the CG recreation of the original set in-game? Full marks for including a bit of Carpark Catchphrase right at the end though Wink

Interactive DVD games, in my experience, are nothing short of cesspit (other rhyming slang combinations are available).

Word-based games, like Blockbusters , are turned to pure rubbish because there's no text input device on a DVD player. You have to be trusted to say whether or not you're right.

Deal or No Deal becomes hilarious on DVD. You cycle through all the boxes, and then pick the one you want to open.

After an endless wait, the player will say 'Good luck', and open his/her box, which seems remarkably empty until the placard is superimposed when it's fully open. After this, there's a ten second wait while the disk whirs and the laser screeches, and then you see a shot of the audience going 'yay!' or 'ooh..' or 'oh no!'.

It seems like everyone in the studio has problems with delayed reactions, all because of the fact that DVD players are a rubbish platform for computer programs.

Good old ITV DVD.

Last year they had an authoring problem on the 'Coronation Street DVD Game' and the 'Emmerdale DVD Game' which played the closing credits at the beginning of the DVD before the ITV Productions logo came up.

These faulty versions can now be found in Poundland for, erm, ... £1!

The Bullseye DVD game's very good. Although the one I bought last year now includes a board game with bendy bully. Damn.
