New Idents on RTE One, Ireland

I just noticed some new idents on RTE One earlier this evening. They follow more or less the same format as the idents introduced in November 2006. I don't know if these are to replace the existing ones or complement them.

I've only seen 2 so far, one includes surfing, the other seems to be about covering things...? I think new music has been composed for these idents. Presentation is the same as before otherwise.

They follow the style of most of Red Bee's work. They're not too bad but I think RTE One really needs an updated logo more than new idents at the moment. The logo is far too plain as it is (the "ONE" looks exactly like the BBC's from the balloon/red box eras).

I see RTE are into the dull-as-ditchwater filmed ident style as well... hmmm.

Makes you wonder what they feed designers these days. About as innovative as putting a picture of a cat on cat-food.

I agree, Jason. From what I have seen on The TV Room, they look like Irish knock offs of the ITV1 Emotion idents (even the position of the logo is remarkably similar).

I fail to see anything interesting in a poorly positioned logo slapped on random live action shots, described as being 'reflective of today's Ireland' (or similar marketing carp).

Another Red Bee 'masterpiece' by the looks of things.

Yes a racoon would suit the tin so much more.

I dunno about you but I find RTE One's idents very dull, the previous package was at least better than this.

The positioning of the RTE One logo middle leftish was done long before ITV even considered bringing in their original atrocious emotional idents, back with the 2003 idents (The TV Room). Shame these new ones don't seem to make much of an attempt with a clearly defined "theme" as compared to the original batch.

EDIT: And for anyone interested, RTE Two's Idents have been running from 2004 and are a quirky, weird batch that were executed in-house. Shame there's no videos available of them though.

The point really is that they're not all incompetent noobs at the state broadcaster when it comes to branding and creating interesting and different identities (Remember whatever you say about Red Bee, it's someone at the respective braodcaster who approves the final product and sends it back if it's not what they want).

Even looking back at the 2003-2006 idents (RTE One's), most looked really well executed on screen and had a strong theme linking them together.

That was before they started seriously messing with them by taking out half of the theme and resorting to standard dull distance shots. There were also several duds and a weird behind the scenes one of a floor/stage manager waving her arms about.

The RTÉ Two Christmas 2007 page is now online; video clips are included. That'll give you an idea of what the idents look like.

As far as I can tell, it is the same font (Gill Sans) but I think someone here before said that it isn't?

In any case, it is the RTÉ corporate font for channels, RTE Two, RTE Radio 1 and RTÉ 2FM all use the same font (although RTÉ Lyric FM and RTÉ Radio na Gaeltachta get away with using different ones).
