The SOUTH EAST political region is:

- Oxfordshire
- Hampshire
- Sussex
- Kent
- Hertfordshire
- Buckinghamshire
- Bedfordshire
- Essex

The EAST political region is:

- Norfolk
- Suffolk
- Cambridgeshire

The EAST MIDLANDS political region is:

- Lincolnshire
- Nottinghamshire
- Leicestershire
- Derbyshire
- Northamptonshire

The NORTH political region is:

- Yorkshire

The NORTH EAST political region is the 'BBC Look North' Newcastle region without Cumbria, which belongs to the NORTH WEST political region.

As I have said before,
tv regions aren't based on the political regions.

Yes I know this, but more effort should be made to make political regions and TV regions correspond with each other. I think the changes of political regions I suggested in my earlier post should be made, plus there should be a North East and Cumbria political region as well as a TV region.

I agree that Lincolnshire should not be in the East Midlands, but it is, and if it wasn't there would be no East Midlands or West Midlands- what would be the point, as Derbys., Leics, Notts. and Northants aren't *that* east, really are they? Warwickshire and Staffordshire aren't WEST, either.

The WEST MIDLANDS political region is:

- Staffordshire
- Shropshire
- Herefordshire
- Worcestershire
- West Midlands
- Warwickshire

If you got rid of Lincs from the East Midlands, you'd have one large political region- 'the Midlands'

Yes that would be true from a political point of view but viewers in Notts, Leics and Northants don't really care about what goes on in the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Shropshire, etc. So there should still be an East Midlands TV region as well as a West Midlands one.

Hull is technically part of Yorkshire. Its transmission area goes a bit further north than there, and then down to the Wash and Lincolnshire, which is part of the East Midlands. The county of Yorkshire comes under the 'North' political region. There is no- political or otherwise- connection between the East Midlands and the North (nor the north Norfolk coast!), except that they both can receive television pictures from the same transmitter.
So a title reflecting a political region that also gives the transmission area, such as 'BBC East Midlands Today' or 'BBC North West Tonight' can not be used.
'BBC Look North' is a wooly title, as it could cover anywhere, really, if you think about it.

I think BBC should rename the Newcastle news region as 'BBC North East Today' and give Cumbria to 'BBC North West Today', where it belongs politically.

Cumbria was in the BBC NW region from 1986-91 before it rejoined the BBC NE region. Cumbria may be in the North West but folk there associate themselves more with Newcastle than Manchester.

Also bear in mind that not all relays transmit the same channels as their parent. Lincoln, for example, is a sub of Belmont and carries YTV; however its BBC signal comes from Waltham, so this would need to be addressed before the new region took to the air or else you would have viewers in Lincolnshire watching the new Hull programme while in Lincoln itself you would be watching Midlands Today!

I'm in the West Midlands now, and I don't care about what is happening in Shropshire, Staffordshire or in Birmingham etc.

There should be a region for the Central Midlands- Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire.

Coventry has far much more in common with Leicestershire and Northamptonshire than it does with Shrewbury, Stoke and Stafford, Wolverhampton, Worcester and Wrexham- all are supposidly covered by Central West.

I know my comments go against the political view, but it's true for us who live here.

Can't visit Skegness, an EAST MIDLANDS seaside town on the EAST coast and watch a programme called 'Look NORTH'. It's stupid!

I think the new show should be called 'BBC North East East Midlands East Coast Tonight'.

How about:

BBC News Scene?

Then you could maybe have:

BBC East Coast News Scene

or

BBC EC Today (EC = East Coast)

Just a few points, David:

1) Christa Ackroyd instead of Claire Frisby: Christa is just too brash and northern for viewers in Lincolnshire and Norfolk. I doubt she'd want to move to the Hull programme.

2) Harry Gration: same as Ackroyd.

No they aren't! I've met them both and to be honest, I think they find ME too brash for them!

3) Ian White: hmmm, maybe but I think Helen Philpot will present the 10.25pm edition.

No Philpot please, I'm Emley now! Recommend a Grimsby opt so Square eyes can have a 'Philpot Moment' every day!

4) Peter Levy: I think you're right about him. I doubt he'd want to leave home (The BBC Leeds studio)!!!!!

Which is why I'll still need Emley! Peter ROCKS!

So here's the scenario:

1) A new bod does the breakfast and weekend bulletins of Look East (Hull). - Might be OK, Boydy on Saturday ain't exactly exciting!

2) Mike Morris and Claire Frisby alternate the lunchtime bulletin at 1.30pm. - Bang go the raucous lunchtimes I like so much!

3) Mike Morris and Claire Frisby host the 6.30pm programme. Paul Hudson does the weather on the 1.30 and 6.30 programmes - Absolutely not! Peter Levy and Paul Hudson must NEVER be seperated!

4) Helen Philpot presents the 10.25pm bulletin. - As long as I have the option of watching LDN!

I think the new Hull studio will be open next year, maybe around January/February - SHUDDER!

By the same token, I live in the SCOTTISH Borders yet have to put up with news from Carlisle, the Lake District and the Isle of Man. As if this isn't enough, soccer coverage (Scotsport apart) consists of matches concerning Merseyside, Mancunian and Lancastrian football clubs!

By rights, the Scottish Borders should be taken out of the Border TV area, given a news service all to itself, and share its programming with SMG rather than Granada. I find it interesting that Lincolnshire & Humberside merits its own news programme while we're still trying to convince the ITC that the Scottish Borders deserves its own service!

It doesn't. Nothing ever happens in Lincolnshire south of Lincoln/Grimsby.

If someone coughs out of turn in the middle of a film or at the theatre, it's an immediate 4-page spread in the Lincolnshire Echo about a possible flu epidemic!!

It would possibly be headline news on the new Hull opt-out too, I reckon...

I remember a few years ago someone saying that Border were so pressed for news that "if a sheep farted, it would be headline news on Lookaround"!

Surely there MUST be interesting things happening in deepest Lincolnshire? Smile

Just a few points, M D R:

1) You would get a region like your suggested "Central Midlands" area if Lincolnshire was removed from the East Midlands political region and from the BBC East Midlands Today/Central News East area.

2) "Skegness, an EAST MIDLANDS seaside town on the EAST coast" - this is a contradiction in terms. A Midland county can't have a coastline. The Midlands region is a land-locked region and this nonsense about Lincolnshire being in the Midlands should end right now!

3) As for your suggestion of a title for the new programme from Hull - you're just being silly now aren't you, M D R?
