Didn't the original Hull press release announce that initially there would be a short period with a fully split half hour programme broadcast using a modified version of the current arrangement - studio in Hull but gallery in Leeds?

Then once the new Hull building is completed the regions would fully split with a full gallery and studio for the programme to be based in Hull?

I don't know how this ties in with the current timescales for the new buildings in Leeds and Hull though...

Typical reply, Katherine. How about this as a scenario - Peter Levy and Paul Hudson move across to Look East (Hull)!!! Peter as co-presenter of the main 6.30pm show with Claire Frisby and he and Claire could alternate the lunchtme bulletin at 1.30pm. Paul could be Look East (Hull)'s weatherman on the 1.30 and 6.30 programmes.

Erm, brilliant attempt but with a few 'minor' modifications: Christa Ackroyd in place of Clare Frisby. Oh, and I need Harry Gration as a banter leveller plus Ian White to do 10:25. Peter Levy hasn't enough time to get between his Radio Leeds morning show that ends at 12:30 to the Hull studio. Best place for this new programme would be somewhere in Leeds! Apart from that, brilliant!

Just a few points, Katherine:

1) Christa Ackroyd instead of Claire Frisby: Christa is just too brash and northern for viewers in Lincolnshire and Norfolk. I doubt she'd want to move to the Hull programme.

2) Harry Gration: same as Ackroyd.

3) Ian White: hmmm, maybe but I think Helen Philpot will present the 10.25pm edition.

4) Peter Levy: I think you're right about him. I doubt he'd want to leave home (The BBC Leeds studio)!!!!!

So here's the scenario:

1) A new bod does the breakfast and weekend bulletins of Look East (Hull).

2) Mike Morris and Claire Frisby alternate the lunchtime bulletin at 1.30pm.

3) Mike Morris and Claire Frisby host the 6.30pm programme. Paul Hudson does the weather on the 1.30 and 6.30 programmes.

4) Helen Philpot presents the 10.25pm bulletin.

I think the new Hull studio will be open next year, maybe around January/February.

I guess its more geographically precise, RB, but it's a bit of a mouthful: "This is BBC1 in the East North East and now, from our Hull studios, Look East North East presented by Claire Frisby and Mike Morris".

It would be much better to say:

"This is BBC1 in the East and now, from our Hull studios, Look East presented by Claire Frisby and Mike Morris".

And in case you're wondering, here's the intro to the Norwich edition of Look East:

"This is BBC1 in the East and now, from our Norwich studios, Look East presented by Susie Fowler-Watt and Stewart White".

On the idents the red boxes would say: BBC ONE East (Hull) before Look East (Hull) and BBC ONE East (Norwich) before Look East (Norwich).

Also, the Yorkshire/North East edition of the TV Listings magazines would be on sale in the Look North (Leeds and Newcastle) regions (i.e. the Emley Moor, Bilsdale, Pontop Pike and Chatton TX areas), whereas the East Anglia/Yorkshire edition, or more simply, the East edition of the TV Listings magazines would be on sale in the Look East (Norwich and Hull) regions (i.e. the Belmont, Sandy Heath, Sudbury and Tacolneston TX areas).

Hull is technically part of Yorkshire. Its transmission area goes a bit further north than there, and then down to the Wash and Lincolnshire, which is part of the East Midlands. The county of Yorkshire comes under the 'North' political region. There is no- political or otherwise- connection between the East Midlands and the North (nor the north Norfolk coast!), except that they both can receive television pictures from the same transmitter.
So a title reflecting a political region that also gives the transmission area, such as 'BBC East Midlands Today' or 'BBC North West Tonight' can not be used.
'BBC Look North' is a wooly title, as it could cover anywhere, really, if you think about it.

I think BBC should rename the Newcastle news region as 'BBC North East Today' and give Cumbria to 'BBC North West Today', where it belongs politically.

Titles such as 'BBC Spotlight' and 'BBC Newsline' are unique and do not refer to region covered in the programme or the transmission area. Maybe something similar could be used for the BBC at Leeds in Yorkshire- 'BBC Look North' is not a good enough title, when something better can be thought of to make Yorkshire seem a special place.

The Hull programme is a difficult region, as it is not politically or geographically sensible- I doubt many people in Hull associate themselves with events in King's Lynn.
Thinking of titles for the show would be hard, as it is hard to not involve the word 'North' because of Hull's political and geographical status. But you don't want to hear 'North' in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire or Norfolk.

It could become a sister region to 'BBC Look East'. I don't know whether Nottinghamshire folk would like to be called 'East' anything, but...

You wouldn't want two BBC news regions called 'BBC Look East'. Adding any more compass points to 'BBC Look East' would complicate things, for example, you could end up with 'BBC Look East North East'. People in the Hull transmission area woud then think 'is it the East, the North or the North East?'

It is similar to how Central Television previously called their news programmes 'Central News East', for example. First you say it's Central, then you contradict yourself by saying the 'East' part- how can somewhere be in the centre AND in the east?

East Riding of Yorkshire
north Lincolnshire
south Lincolnshire (overlap)
north Nottinghamshire (overlap)
north Norfolk (overlap)

Most of the transmission area is on an overlap area anyway, meaning that most of the news is probably going to come from Hull and environs, and northern Lincolnshire.

It is the east coast of England, but not a real region.

I know Lincolnshire is in the East Midlands political region but IT SHOULDN'T BE!!!! Lincolnshire is on the EAST COAST of England and that alone disqualifies the county from being in the Midlands. As far as I'm concerned, a Midland county does not have a coastline and Lincolnshire definitely does.

Politically, Lincolnshire should be in the East of England region and Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire should be in the South East England region. There should also be a South of England political region comprising Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

However, I digress. I suggest that the new BBC regional news programme from Hull should be called Look East because East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North Norfolk are all on the EAST COAST of England. Also, from an agricultural point of view, these counties, along with Nottinghamshire, make up one of the largest areas of arable farming in the country. This is also the case in the Look East (Norwich) region.

You could add 'East Coast' to the title, but the east coast is Scotland down to Kent- this is not definitive enough.

I think a title that has nothing to do with geography or the transmission area should be chosen- like 'BBC Spotlight', 'BBC Newsbeat' or 'BBC Newsline', or even just 'BBC Hull'.

'BBC Hull News' makes it sound like it is just about Hull, though (similar to BBC LDN just for London...)
