Hey guys and girls, I've e-mailed BBC Look North (Leeds) about the name of the new programme from Hull and I got this reply:

David

Thanks for your comments.
These are the early days of the planning of the new service. I will pass on
your thoughts to the relevant people.
As always establishing the name of a programme is the key to its having
impact and relevance. All theses aspects under consideration at the moment.

Yours sincerely

So have you got any suggestions for the name of the BBC's new regional news programme from Hull? Like I've said before I think it should be called Look East because the programme will serve the coast of East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North Norfolk. Also Lincolnshire and Norfolk are not really in the North and if the programme was called Look North, there would be three programmes with the name Look North (Hull, Leeds and Newcastle).

It would be better two have two editions of Look East (Hull and Norwich) rather than three editions of Look North.

YLN (short for Yorkshire Lincolnshire News), Humber Tonight, YKR (short for Yorkshire - like LDN for London), Look Humber, all seem like good names.

Not neccesarily. As the Leeds programme would only be covering the counties called Yorkshire (West, North (except East Riding) and South), it could easily be renamed as something like Yorkshire Today , allowing Hull to use the Look North name, yet with there still only being two regions called Look North .

It's difficult to come up with something original for the Hull programme because of the area it covers: " Lincolnshire Today " rather ignores other parts of the region, but " Lincolnshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire and North/North West Norfolk Today " doesn't really trip off the tongue. So either Look North or Look East seems best.

They could get around it a bit like how London Plus did - although that title only mentions "London", the word "Plus" is a nod to the other areas in the region (i.e. the title is like a contraction of " London , plus other parts of the south east too" )

Following the same logic as that title, it therefore could be called something like " Around Lincolnshire " - the word "Around" serving as a similie for "Within" and as a similie for "Surrounding" all at the same time. It's just a thought...

EDIT: And how about the name of the region itself? Leeds will become BBC Yorkshire no doubt. So what will Hull become? The red BBC One box rather stupidly doesn't allow for longer region names (as "Yorks & Lincs", "NE & Cumbria" and "NI" viewers will be very aware) and the only accurate names for the new region will undoubtably be long - containing any combination of at least two of the following phrases:

(a) East Yorkshire (b) East Riding (c) Lincolnshire (d) Norfolk (e) North Norfolk (f) North West Norfolk

It'll be BBC Humber - there's already a website using that name, which includes Look North (Yorks&Lincs) and BBC Radio Humberside.

OK, how about this for the name of the actual region: BBC East (Hull). The existing BBC East region would be called BBC East (Norwich) and the two programmes would be called Look East.

The Leeds programme would also cover northern areas of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
North Nottinghamshire would also be covered by the Hull programme (Look East (Hull)), as the area is covered by both the Emley Moor and Belmont transmitters. This is also the case in parts of North and South Yorkshire and even some of Lincolnshire (i.e. around Gainsborough).

Having said that, I think that MOST viewers in East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Norfolk would want to see Look East (Hull). That's if the BBC give the programme the right name.

I don't think YLN or Look Humber are very good titles, because there would be accusations of bias towards Hull (in the case of Humber Today) or, in the case of YLN, viewers in North Notts and North Norfolk would be annoyed and feel excluded by the programme.

The current Yorks & Lincs name already ignores other parts of the region, such as north Norfolk etc. So if the name of a fully seperate Hull service also ignored them, it wouldn't make things worse .

How about a title related to the Wash?

How about just stop trying to unite East Anglia and the East Midlands with the North..!!!!!

I think it should be called:

Hell-Hull Tonight

Drop Down Dead

The Beast of Belmont

The Sick-Bucket show

The UK's Worst Regional News Programme

Room 101 fodder

The Let's Deprive Katherine of Her Favourite Regional Presenters Show

New weather presenter just announced: Crud the Dud

Lunchtime presenter: Petra Leviathan

Trisha: Face it Kid, It Ain't Gonna Work!

Judge Judy: Finds the Belmont transmitter guilty opf treachery

Bleurgh Jacobs' House Party

Oh, closing titles will be played over our own ABBA tribute band singing their hits: Group members: Clare Frisby, Helen Philpot, Bleurgh Jacobs and Matthew Gull.

Long-range weather forecast - Viewers: Rock all!

Typical reply, Katherine. How about this as a scenario - Peter Levy and Paul Hudson move across to Look East (Hull)!!! Peter as co-presenter of the main 6.30pm show with Claire Frisby and he and Claire could alternate the lunchtme bulletin at 1.30pm. Paul could be Look East (Hull)'s weatherman on the 1.30 and 6.30 programmes.

All that money spent on getting Sky just so you can get Look North (Leeds) would be wasted!!!!

Erm, brilliant attempt but with a few 'minor' modifications: Christa Ackroyd in place of Clare Frisby. Oh, and I need Harry Gration as a banter leveller plus Ian White to do 10:25. Peter Levy hasn't enough time to get between his Radio Leeds morning show that ends at 12:30 to the Hull studio. Best place for this new programme would be somewhere in Leeds! Apart from that, brilliant!

When exactly is this new region going to be up and running? I noticed while in Hull the other day that the framwork has not begun to go up yet and this work started in January. Can`t also see any presenters from Leeds moving down the M62 though I may be wrong.

2003? Something like that

In relation to new presenters, They might get them from the current team, Such as Ian White etc, or someone completely new might be introduced
