It's worth noting that the 4Music BOX TV red button thing doesn't work on YouView boxes, same goes for the other 'connected' Freeview HD services too.

Annoyingly the application seems to be designed to load on all Freeview HD receivers, regardless of whether they support MHEG-IC. Switching to 4Music on my Sony TV causes the TV to crash as soon as the press red prompt load, causing my TV to stop responding to remote commands and randomly reboot itself.

YouView I believe is going to take the approach of giving IPTV services numbers on the EPG, in a similar style to the Connect TV services on the Freeview HD EPG. I believe the plan is to launch those services this summer, although I believe it is ISP dependant, so for example BT Broadband customers will see the BT Vision channels listed,

I'm hoping in the long term we'll see many more SD and HD services delivered via IPTV on all ISPs.

Going off on a bit of a tangent here - all SD services on the Sky platform are still DVB-S, because that's what oodles of old Sky boxes can handle. DVB-S2 is far more efficient - you wonder how much Sky would save on transponder costs if they switched all their SD services to S2 and sent all their SD subscribers a new box?

Haven't they been sending all customers Sky+HD boxes as standard for quite some time now, so presumably those with an SD box must be a fairly small proportion.

Yes - but they've been supplying SD boxes since 1998 - and lots of them shifted to multi room or FTV/FTA boxes in secondary areas when people upgraded to HD.

Weren't the Freesat from Sky boxes SD for a long time too (including those provided in some regions as the DSO solution for those on low incomes etc.?)

I think shifting SD services to DVB-S2 will be a while away. I know people still running first gen Pace boxes as FTV and FTA boxes as well as SD pay-TV.

5later sounding like 4Seven perhaps?
4seven HD has been awarded a licence, alongside Channel 4+1 HD, the first +1 in HD!

Took me a few attempts to stop automatically reading "5later" as "Slater". Not too keen on that name, it sounds a bit 5tupid to me.

Not sure how I feel about Channel 4 using their slots for 4Seven and 4HD+1 -- I don't know what he rating are like, but from a marketing point of view, are these channels really more attractive than More4/Film4/E4?

Haha, I think I'd just call it "Slater". Wink

As for the 4seven and 4+1 HD thing - C4+1 isn't very appealing in HD to me. 4seven I like.

I wonder when all channels will become HD and 3D!

You do realise they'd be the same programmes, just at different times? Neither has any more appeal than the other.

I'd rather see E4 and Film4 in HD.

A few people on DS are thinking 5later is just a new name for Channel 5 +1 but I have to disagree.

It's A new channel not a name change request is it not?
Unless there are further changes to come such as the EPG slot for +1 changes to a new channel

Yes, I know that. I like the fact they air the programmes previosuly on C4 throughout the next seven days.

I am really hoping they'd be nothing more than holding channels until any potential issues with launching E4, Film4 or More4 in HD on Freeview are resolved. It's questionable enough already whether +1 channels are a good use of space on Freeview in general, never mind them taking HD slots.

I like the idea of C4 having a +1 slot on Freeview, I just don't think they should be allowed a HD channel slot. That slot could be used for another channel that'd be much better apt for a HD slot. Film 4 is a good candidate, as they broadcast films. This would be much better for them to do.

Weren't E4HD and More4HD launched with assistance from Sky? ISTR, like ITV2-4HD, that they aren't on Freesat and are encrypted for Sky HD (not sure if they are FTV - ITV2-4HD aren't) viewers only? Could be that Sky have a contractual deal with C4 to keep them exclusive? (Sky and C4 had an arrangement that meant C4 HD was not on Freesat for quite a while)
