So if that is correct :

4.3m/22.6% share last night compared to 4.7m/20.2% for the previous series first show.

So last night's show got a higher share (i.e. more people watching TV watched Top Gear than the previous show) but fewer people in total were watching TV.

For a first show those figures are not too shabby. Will be interesting to see how the run goes.

Completely unsurprising but irrelevant. 300+ comments on that site last count? Millions more tuned in, and at least half of those will tune in again next week.

I very much doubt it, judging by the terrible reviews and Twitter comments it has been getting. I'll be surprised if it even lasts a series. I expect this series to be Top Gear's last.

You like to exaggerate everything don't you; do you write for a tabloid?. They know it's not going to instantly make everyone happy who used to enjoy the show and people don't like change. I'm sure if they give it time (which they most likely will) it'll grow on people.

Chris is more than a presenter though - he's effectively show-running alongside a BBC Exec and the Series Editor... (Just as Clarkson + Wilman did before. AIUI Clarkson effectively wrote the show)

Indeed, I didn't realise how involved he was, and I spotted this morning that his old mate is credited as writer for the show. So I definitely would have lost that bet!

I didn't see it. Did they do it from the same location? If so they will have had time constraints on crew etc. - so they will have had to work to a duration. (Also it will probably be budgeted for a certain duration)

Yes it was the same studio as far as I could tell - they used the format used for the news feature in previous series of the main show, with a couple of behind the scenes films near the beginning and end.

Pretty much - this article by Richard Porter (the script editor) is very good on how the Clarkson incarnation was made:

Apparently the studio recording which included Extra Gear, lasted a couple of hours longer than they planned, though that isn't unusual for the first session of a new production

Preferring Extra Gear to the main show, feels more relaxed and better chemistry (doesn't feel forced).

Oh dear. I expected bad but this is really bad! LeBlanc is promising but Evans is not only all "me, me, me" he's ultimately not Jeremy Clarkson. The humour was very forced and not particularly funny. I expect a considerable fall in figures next week.

Be quite difficult to do that if it has any overseas sales already...

It may already have overseas sales because of the brand name but I wouldn't expect people in other countries to watch it. They're in the same boat as us - Clarkson, Hammond and May were Top Gear for them.

Wow, that is terrible for the debut of a new era of a TV show, especially when most people were watching to point and laugh at how much of a car crash (pun intended) the show was. If the first episode only got 4.3 million, it'll be fun to see what the next episodes get. My guess is by episode six it will dip below a million viewers.

Most people I know don't tend to watch kids shows. Certainly not kids shows made to look like adult ones and broadcasted it on BBC2.

That was the main criterion for the job.

It wasn't terrible and I'm sure it'll find its feet as Evans calms down, but there's anything people can learn from Top Gear - it's that it's bloody hard to make good telly.

How far in advance is the series made? Is the whole thing in the can already? I imagine they're going to want to make some changes as the run goes on. At least at six episodes this is probably earmarked as a transition series where they can mess it up and see what works and what doesn't; because the show is arguably too valuable for the BBC to lose or make a total pig's ear of.

Haven't watched Extra Gear, but I wonder if that'll be the first place they look to find a third presenter - the main show seemed all the poorer without one as it relied so heavily on Evans and Le Blanc's not-quite-there-yet chemistry.

It was reported two weeks ago about how the chris acted on the first episode being created so I get the feeling the last few episodes have yet to be wrapped up
