Not sure how much space a text service takes - or if Teletext on ITV will utilise space currently not used for an ITV text service or take over from the service on Ch 9.

Teletext on channel 9 takes up 3% of the mux and teletext on 4 is considerably less than that.

Thanks.

Picking up on that point, I wonder if with the launch of Teletext on ITV they may consider letting ITV 3 move to channel 9.

I'm sure most viewers prefer Teletext in the form of viewing it by pressing TEXT when watching ITV/C4 rather than selecting a specific channel.

I'd like to see Living TV or Challenge on Freeview, never have been the least bit interested in Sky One.

Not sure what the deal is with Teletext - they share a mux with ITV and C4, which is generally seen to be a 50/50 split between the two services.

Not sure how much space a text service takes - or if Teletext on ITV will utilise space currently not used for an ITV text service or take over from the service on Ch 9. It might even be possible that it's the same service as on C4 (except the C4 pages!), just with different branding.

Hopefully the introduction of Teletext on ITV will lead to improvements with Teletext on 4 and both services having the core pages. The Ch 9 service should then be a Teletext + type service and include extras such as features, the complete TV guide, etc.

Going back on topic - I think the new channel will be from an outsider - and probably a shopping channel. I can't see ITV or C4 willing to bid for it as it'll devalue their case for an additional multiplex. And as for E4 going free-to-air, C4 say it's a possibility, but unlikely. Also, Five have said today plans for a new channel are now looking like a distant possibility.

I've stated before the current split of the multiplexes is completly unfair, see: Freeview: Multiplex shake up . If the BBC having four times as much space for their services as their main rivals isn't anti-competitive, what is?

The mulitplex scenario is a bit strange. Though thinking about it, if ITV and Channel 4 were to have won it, wouldn't it be similar, yet the other way around?

Why are Teletext on 4 currently not adding core pages like TV Plus, and Total Entertainment?

It will be interesting to see how things work out.

Doesn't that mean further loss of picture quality?

Not necessarily. If all they were doing is racking up the compression so that they could fit an extra stream in, then ITV NC would never have left. What they are doing is replacing old (mid-90's) kit with newer stuff. It's not that MPEG2 can't be compressed more without loosing picture quality, it's that the older encoders can't compress any more in real time without sacrificing picture quality. Newer encoders allow for much more efficient real time encoding, which will allow the streams to be more compressed at no reduction in quality (indeed, it's not entirely out of the question that a slight improvement in quality might happen as a result of this.

Interesting. Will this apply across all services or just freeview? As at the moment the ITV picture on Sky isn't that great at all!

I am probably one of the few people who likes UKTV Bright Ideas, but I would love the proposed Freesports channel as well. It's about time Freeview got a proper sports channel.

In reply to your questions, firstly Im hearing that if RTE do come to freeview, which in my opinion seems somewhat farfetched would only be available on the Irish DTT Network.
secondly from the line up published were on pretty shaw ground saying that in 2005 the following channels WILL launch:
More 4, Channel 4's Factual Channel
Teachers TV and NHS Direct Data, as the government is leaning heavily on several broadcasters currently looking what will happen if they launch with NHS Data. Teachers Tv has been confirmed and will launch on my Birthday, February 8th.
Right now we get into the "swampey" land of rumour with Freeview, and before I start I would remind you, Freeview can only hold so many channels.... That said.....
Freesport has been bashing around for ages, its well known that there was a flurry of activity on this subject back in May, but later turned out to be Teletext.
EXPRESS SHOPPING CHANNEL, NO,NO,NO! Christ help us... Why, why why another second rate, **** channel offering **** to go with the other four, brilliant!
quite interested in Silverscreen, My college has been doing a bit on freeview in the last few weeks, sources within Freeview have told him they "are keen" to have free-to-air film channel soon, but there again, for how long have we been promised a sports channel? - Won't get hopes up!
EDIT: Im been told that 9 Live is to be a gaming channel, from Channel 4. However we are currently also been told from Channel that these rumours are not true, there will be no gambling channel.

The rest... Promises, promises... We live in hope
