Looks like they've got the numbers board on the back of the letters side so it can be rotated. Was previously lifted in and out of position several times during the recording.
No the numbers and letters board has been designed like this since the 2009 set refresh when Jeff and Rachel started.

This has now debuted in the afternoons. Have they ditched the audience - didn't appear in vision as all on Monday with all wide shots being of just the set with a fairly large space in front of it, although I know the audience were further back on the old set for the main show compared to Cats does Countdown.

The audience has always been quite far back, rarely seen on screen. Usually quite often you hear the warm up man laughing, to which I haven't heard yet, I hope they haven't ditched the audience element, but I guess it's worth waiting until they throw an unresolved Conundrum to the audience then we'll know for sure.
Wonder if they've taken the opportunity to make the contestant positions accommodate two people more comfortably for Cats down?
Looks like they add different ends to the desk for "Catsdown" to accommodate more people. Jimmy is sitting much further to the right and the desk doesn't have a gradual slope.
I guess because Nick stays behind the desk for the whole show, Jimmy moves around the set during the various visual gags during the clock sequence and at the start of the show, and in the opening. Being able to remove that bit of the set probably makes it all a bit more flexible. Clever.
At the risk of stating the obvious, you do know that the show is recorded and edited before broadcast? If something had gone seriously wrong they would have stopped, fixed it then carried on.
It sounds like they just happened to leave today's incident (it's not an outtake if they transmitted it) as a brief funny rather.
