The key bit in the press release is:

"on one of C4’s channel"

The job might just be to record the links that get played out automatically on E4.

I'd say it's more likely they'd be looking for voices for More4 at the moment, but who knows?

Channel 4 like using people who have an edge to their voices. Gone are the days when C4 announcers sounded like they were on the BBC, we now have young girls and boys with quite a high proportion of regional accents (Scottish, Ulster, Manchester etc.).

I wonder what the average age of all of the C4 announcers is?

Mid-thirties I guess, about the same as the BBC announcers - although a few years ago the difference would have been quite big with the average age at C4 about ten years older than at the BBC.

With some announcers who have worked at other stations (Gary Terzza, Tracey Anne Griffiths) and announcers who have been there for around 10 years or so, you're probably right Dan. Having said that, regardless of age, most of the voices on Channel 4 you can identify and associate with the station.

Apart from Barra Fitzgerald who still does my head in...

And don't forget David McLeod who's fantastic and probably the most identifiable C4 voice (along with Gary maybe) as he's been there so long. I'm pretty sure it's his voice they do on Dead Ringers which must say something..!

Having said that I think Barra (Fitzgibbon Smile) is great too but maybe that's because I find a Dublin accent quite refreshing having not heard many accents apart from SE English on tv when I was growing up. Are you from the same part of the world as him Col?

C4 definitely has a very identifiable sound though, with one or two exceptions. Perhaps something the BBC should have paid more attention to while it employed its own announcers..!

That's him - aka the Scottish bloke - he must be at Channel 4 for at least ten years ago and still a welcome sound, when I hear him on duty it reminds me of a pre-Friends, pre-BB era of 4.

Perhaps it's more me thinking that hearing Irish accents on the same playing field as other British accents that it stands out more and sounds a bit overawing, but also stands out for me and in a way makes me think that's the way the UK viewing public think Irish people talk. Although it's just the way Barra puts emphasis on certain words in his links that doesn't seem to sound right.

I'm from Northern Ireland myself, Dan, and trying as best as I can not to develop too much of an English accent now I'm an immigrant worker Smile

I know what you mean - on the current Big Brother trails he sounds very angry when he says the name of the programme Smile

What would be a continuity announcer's annual salary?

If freelance then it would be on a per shift basis, contract or staff I'd be very surprised to learn it exceeded £30,000 PA.

BBC, ITV or Channel4 announcers probably send fan letters to the service manager at their local Kwik-Fit, an income to be envied and discounts on a wide range of motor parts.

I think C4 announcers get closer to £40k Banksey. Freelance rates I'd guess at about £200 a shift.
