BE THE VOICE OF 4
Have you got what it takes to be an announcer on one of C4’s channels?

You’ve heard them a million times between the programmes. It sounds easy, but you’ll need split-second timing, the ability to write a script and nerves of steel. Above all you need the right voice.

So what are we looking for?

Natural and enthusiastic, warm but not cheesy, relaxed, distinctive.

Want to send us an audio tape/CD/VHS?

We want to hear how you think an announcer should sound on one of our channels – so don’t imitate anyone else, just be yourself. An ordinary audio cassette or CD-R will do – there’s no need for professional recording equipment.

What’s needed on the recording?

For around 30 seconds, give us a brief audio CV. Who are you? How do we contact you? What’s your background? Have you any relevant experience (radio/tv/journalism/writing)? Remember we want to hear your natural speaking voice.

Write and voice a 10 second intro into your own choice of a Channel4/E4 entertainment or comedy programme.

Pick a serious programme from TV listings that’s on Channel4 this week. Write and voice a 10 second intro.

Write and voice a 30 second announcement for a typical evening’s programmes on Channel 4 (i.e. a ‘menu’ or ‘run down’). You should cover 4 programmes. You must be brief but make each programme sound unmissable.

Where to send the recording?

Yes, I'm sure several people here have in fact got what it takes.

I think that page is always on the C4 website, just as a trawl for who's out there - not aware of them specifically looking for anyone at the moment.

Well if a geordie can narrate big brother then they'll probably take anyone.

I applied a few days ago, although I get the distinct feeling I don't really stand a chance not having any discernable regional accent.

The key bit in the press release is:

"on one of C4’s channel"

The job might just be to record the links that get played out automatically on E4.

It is interesting, some of the different policies on different channels....
If I remember, the BBC were looking for announcers without a strong regional accent... and yet a few of Channel 4's announcers do.

They use Marcus Bentley as a continuity announcer as well, of course. And also the bloke who was the voice of K-9.

I think E4 still has live announcers in peaktime; they certainly used to.

Every time they've advertised in the last ten years the BBC has claimed to be looking for people with regional accents, and to be fair they have taken on some, although I'm not sure they have "strong" regional accents.

And that's the problem these days, not just with annos but any V/O artist used for promotions. Political correctness is the prime consideration above all else.

If the tones of Peter Brook were OK just a few years ago, why not now? And if only BBC3 would take the 1 and 2 announcers, it would reduce the "chav" feel.

Having announcers with regional accents on C4 adds to the statiohn's identity - diverse and reflective of its audience. Although I was thinking a few minutes ago that they didn't have any Welsh announcers, that's probably the S4C factor...

And I'm sure I heard Vuyiswa Ngqobougwana announce on E4 the other night, possibly live.

Hmm, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this but will the legendary Maggie Mash be the new C4 announcer?

Then the whole country (apart from those who only get analogue S4C - poor souls) will hear the voice of this GREAT lady! Razz

You forgot the "gone mad" bit of the cliché.

I agree, and also I was just watching Maggie doing the links into Corrie on TV Whirl, and I miss her announcing skills. Crying or Very sad
