Anyone else catch the performance of the new Murray Gold-tweaked Blue Peter signature tune at the BBC Proms at the weekend? It's going to debut on the TV transmissions of Blue Peter from the series' return in September.

The version played at the concert was a full 2min+ rendition, which will obviously be edited down for a TV version. However, I was very impressed with the mix of what sounded to be a very similar composition to the original 1950s theme tune, mixed in with a few new instruments and a slight variation in rhythm. The whole thing sounds fantastic, and great that they got the viewers to help record it.

I reckon that there's going to have to be a new titles/presentation style to accompany the music. Despite the current on air graphics and titles only being two years old and produced no doubt at great expense by the former BBC Broadcast, I can't see them fitting in with the new orchestral score at all. I hope we see a return to a more pre-1990s style opening to the show with VT from that day's edition used and logo and presenter credits overlaid. I'm not a massive fan of the "posey" opening titles that were adopted in the mid 90s.

I don't know if a closing theme has been recorded or not. I hope so, but I'm doubtful. We lost out on a unique closing theme for the 1999-2004 seasons, but with the last rerecord of the music it returned. However, I've read on Wikipedia that the new mix does not include one (sobs). How accurate Wikipedia's contributions are is of course up for debate!

As for the studio set, I would assume that with the last major redesign only occurring in 2004, we won't get a new set, which I'm quite happy about, because the current "sail" theme is great and is quite traditionally BP.

Anyone who missed the prom can listen to it again on the BBC Radio 3 website and listening to Prom 12: Blue Peter Prom Part 2. The new theme is the finale to the prom, and occurs at around the 50minute duration point on the radio player.

It sounds as if it is being performed by the Springfield Elementary School Band on a day Lisa was off.

I think they should have all the presenters in front of a plasma screen, which the camera zooms into and clips from the show follow. Then they show coming up then a couple more clips then a 3D boat reveals the logo then there's a split effect into the programme.

BTW,I've gone through the whole thing and it's not there. And i don't think they'd do an opera version of the theme!

It is at exactly the location described in the original post.

Yep it's still there. Listen to the Blue Peter Prom Part Two... and the nearest point you can fast forward to is the 50 minute point where they begin to introduce the kids who helped produce the new theme. Listen for about 2 mins and you'll hear it.

It sounds awful. Very reminiscent of the late 90's version done with pots and pans. Rolling Eyes

God knows why that version was in use for so long, they used it for 5 years!

I wasn't a big fan of that pots n pans version... not least because it really sounded nothing like "Barnacle Bill". The new version with the Phillharmonic doing their bit sounds far more suitable. I guess we'll have to wait until the tweaked TV version airs, when there will no doubt have been many refinements made in the edit suite to make it sound less "playschool" like.
