The idents are about dance. Plain and simple. No controversy about the state of the BBC in 21st century Britain. Just dance. Got it? Good.
Including the well-known Skateboard Dance.
And of course that all time favourite, the wheelchair dance.
Sorry, as StevieWizzyWick has said- "dance" should be replaced with "dance, rhythm and movement". So yes, skateboards can move (rhymically some would say) and the same goes for wheelchairs.

Frankly, I think that you're just making quotes up, but lets humour you for a moment. I look at the idents and I see rhythm, dance, movement from around the world. Oooh look, that matches up with the what your quote says. But I suppose you think a room full of asians, followed by a room full of whites, then chinese, then blacks better represents this aim (wouldn't want to dare interbreed- that would be terribly un-British). Patronising drivel. If you can't think up of a decent concept yourself, far be it from you to critcise a relatively simple concept of rhythm, movement and dance from around the globe to provide a few moments of interest between programs.

So says a citizen of the world.
OOhh get you! Don't get your knackers in a knot! With regards to a decent concept, and don't let me patronise you here, it will be many years before one is thought up. But a household full of ordinary people doing ordinary things is far more reflective than some tribesmen jumping up and down in Africa. Frankly, I think the dancers have destroyed the credibility of BBC1's idents and that made up quote is from memory based on something that the mad one said on GMTV and it was in the telegraph on Wednesday March 27th 2002. Obviously not word for word because to remember that would be just too intelligent. I think I lined the cat litter tray with it. Anyway, you are the only one who thinks that the idents do not reflect multi-culturism. Learn to respect other peoples opinions and take that chip off your shoulder.
I'm not a fan of the whole set, the idea IMO was fairly weak to start off with, and it was always going to be difficult succeeding the balloons. They were very varied, with flowing soundtracks and very adaptable. These are some reasons for not replacing them...
But anyway, the only really strong feature of the set is the music, the same tune but using varied instruments ties the whole mess together. This latest example is truly awful, the music, the 'dance' and the camera movements. Heggessy has generally been good for BBC One, one or two high profile failures, but outweighed by many successes; but a new controller, who wants to stamp their mark on the channel would be much appreciated.
It's just awful. A head pops up, some shuffling goes on and the camera pans out. There's nothing remotely creative or "yeah, wow" about this whatsoever. At least with the Skateboarders we had the contrasting audio/visual effect. I expected tribal to conjure up some hard hitting tune - in the 'long balloon ident of past' sort of way. It just doesn't grab me.
It kind of reminds me of a cheap festival ident, except in a desert/plain with mowri dancers. It may have been better if there were more of them. The music accompaning it is a good twist on the tune.

Yeah...it is pretty disgraceful. I reckon the music will eventually catch on, but hey....it is way off the mark compared to BBC1 Skateboarders. Just think just how much practise and effort that must have taken to shoot the Skateboarders ident - without falling over etc. At 1st, people said that the music was strange to go with that ident...but now, it seems to work pretty well.
The flow of the Skateboarders movement, the stunts they perform, the well orchestrated music...exactly as someone siad earlier...in the style of the old globe kind of music.
To me...this ident seems to be have been put together in the following disgraceful way:-
1. Get a load of Masaii men to stand together.
2. Position the camera just offset...not central, so that ths shot is not aligned.
3. Focus on the horizon and then pan out slowly.
4. Tell the blokes to just start jumping around randomly in no sort of arrangement or rhythm.
5. Continue to film them doing this whilst someone knocks up the BBC1 ident music on their keyoard in the background.
6. Tell them it doesn't matter that the camera is way off the centre...just keep jumpng and we'll keep filming.
7. Film the thing once and once only, no matter how crap it looks.
8. Stick a BBC1 logo in the bottom left.
9. Go to the pub for a beer and congratulate everyone on filming such a fantastic ident.

You are so right Asa. This is without a doubt the worst ident of the whole lot. It's boring and pointless...
The BBC ONE idents dont have to contain dances...the idea is 'movement and rhythm'
Well in that case I would like to see one of a spoon tapping a big red jelly in time to the music. Should work.
I've also noted it is another ident in which the shot starts on a big ugly face before drawing out to show the whole scene. That's enough of that particular style now, thank you.
