Finally saw the new breakfiller on screen this morning... It's not bad, definitely better than the old one that was just stuck on "Coming Up" (we never got "Just A Moment" in Canada), but still a far cry from the original 2000 breakfiller IMO. The yellow just doesn't seem to fit with the existing ident. Music is rather odd; the old music was more distinct. Everything just seems rather random and cluttered; the old breakfiller was cleaner.
The which-part-of-the-world-is-in-daylight-now map is pretty cool, though.
Derek - very glad you said that! It's exactly what I thought...
It's clever, yes, but not as artistically well done as the 2000 breakfiller.. which was allowed to rot sadly.
The music, if done by David Lowe, has no connection with anything else on World.. which could be a sign of things to come, but it certainly seems weird that it's in a totally different key and has no timing points... that's really *not* like DL's previous stuff (if you've ever watched how the previous sequences were perfectly timed to 30", why are these not timed to 15"?)... and I for me that nasty noise after about 20" ruins whatever audio is above it at the time.
Of course - it's possible DL was just following orders and nobody mentioned anything about timing or it being a bed for voices & other audio.. but does anyone know who created (/project led) the 2000 breakfiller design and who did this one?
Incidentally now it seems they've dropped the short stabs before the top of hour countdown with throw forward to Hardtalk etc, so it's a nasty fade out on the breakfiller then a nasty fade in on the countdown!.. Now *that's* a far cry from 2000 when a promo led directly to the 10" countdown (with the held note running under the end of the promo) - very slick.
Here's a bit more info about the new break fillers ...
They're known as Dynamic Junctions and were created by BBC Broadcast to quote "enable World to keep viewers informed of programmes coming up, local time zone programme guides, regular weather and financial market updates, audience comment" and more. Advertisers can also place their logo within three alternating information panels, which appear alongside the trailers and news bulletins.
Still trailer audio buried in the music bed.. if the levels are gonna be constant they need to compress trailer or bed, or at least dip music further & compress overall.
Also.. for me the schedule info is now pretty much unusable - i didn't realise it would show me a different time zone each time.. CET, HKST, EST, IST etc - that's no use to me (and no, I don't have time to cross-reference the time difference chart!).. if they used that extra space on the right hand side they could do:
GMT CET HKST EST
08.00 xx.xx xx.xx xx.xx name of programme
- The mini-countdown clock is gone
- The text in the "NEXT bar" is much bigger than the text in the "In XX mins" bar.
It seems to be back to the way it started. I beleive World was having a few difficulties in generating the proper information, so they just temporarily overlayed that graphic on top of it.
The overlay seems to be used when there's a change of programme or timing . It happened just now because they decided to drop "This Week" to continue breaking news coverage.. in this case the overlay appeared a minute into the sequence which had been showing the countdown mini-timer... interestingly the GMT current time and the daylight mask over the map *also* disappeared.. although I can't see why they should!
Nicky.. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would be interested to know about the technical side of this system if you have anyway of finding out... I know this *could* be performed on a PC or ARM machine playing out MPEG clips etc, but I wasn't sure if it was some custom built monster they had bought in.... I just assumed it was "home made" since I know there's a bit of an issue about paying for a system which covers for unsold airtime!(ie. it's a bit strange to spend on something that's required when they're not earning!)
"BBC NEWS continues
Schedules may be subject to change"
straight after Anita's special close - the next summary cancelled for a full bulletin by the looks of it.
World must be staying on the air for another hour, as they were scheduled to have a 5-min summary, followed by weather and "Capitalism" at 1510. They did a full headline sequence at 1500, which usually isn't a feature of a summary, suggesting they are continuing.
Since they've introduced the new breakfillers, they've got rid of the next trailers as well and because of that we are now treated to much longer countdown's, I saw one starting at 42 secs today!

lol yes!!
The little In 30 Minutes Pointers have gone as well by the looks. A lot more happy helpings of countdown to come, instead of the meagre 12 seconds!
