My personal viewpoint with regards to DOGs is that they should be translucent, located at the bottom right corner of the screen, and with no colours. 4:3 safe DOGs on widescreen programming should also be scrapped, it's not on to subject 16:9 viewers with a DOG floating in the middle of the screen.
As hideous as the BBC3 DOG is now and as inappropriately huge as it appears, if they only moved it to the bottom right corner, toned down the intensity of it a bit and gave up on making it 4:3 safe, it would be much less intrusive and stop the screen from looking so cluttered - even with the actual graphic itself being exactly the same size.
The ABC1 DOG is presented in exactly that way, is at least the same size (if not a little bigger) than the BBC3 DOG, and is barely noticeable.

Indeed, I don't, nor will I until I have no choice. But that's not the point. If I did have a widescreen set, I can think of little more annoying that having a channel DOG floating in the corner of my screen, just because the broadcaster wants it to be 4:3 safe to make sure that everyone sees it.

Oh I see what you mean now. I thought you meant that us 4:3ers would be a disadvantage.
But we still would be, as on E4 when a widescreen programme is on, we get 'ip' instead of 'Catch-up' or whatever.

As long as BBC Three have stopped doing that (which it looks like they have), the logo could fit quite comfortably outside of the safe-areas, so that 4:3 viewers would get no on-screen clutter at all. Something I'm sure a lot of 4:3 owners would be very happy about!

I personally think the fact that fiuve got rid of their dog, and the fact that BBC 3 & 4 do sometimes remove their dog is an open admission byt them that they really aren't needed and they do annoy viewers- otherwise they'd keep them there.
I wonder when the TV companies will realise that we don't want colourful scrolling "next" banners over our programmes as well. There's jsut a slittle need for them, and they're even more distracting & annoying (especially when the announcer repeats what's up next 20 seconds later and the info is accessible at the touch of a button anyway!). There marketing men who come up with these things really are clueless.

I know exactly what you mean. I was watching an episode of "Have I Got News For You?" on UKTV G2 the other evening. A few seconds before the end, a blue pointer came on the screen to tell me "Game One" (read "Game On) was next. About 10 seconds later, the credits started to roll and the continuity announcer told me the same thing again!
The new BBC Three DOG is just heinous. It's far too big and just looks awful. I think Stuart Murphy is taking the pi** now.

E4's next DOG has to be the worst. For example, if Friends is finishing, the credits are at the bottom of the screen. Now, you may want to see who the guest star is, but you can't because 'NEXT: More Friends' is covering it. It's totally pointless and it's way too big...

If anything, they should use the old Next DOG that was in the top right hand corner....

It is rediculous really. I personally go out of my way to avoid any programme which is promoted in this way. Also, I like Bewitched, but it's on Living TV who have a very nasty habit of those massive purple programme promotion things which appear seemingly at random moments (also, they use a DOG to say bewitched is "all new"- for a show that's 40 years old!). these things really annoy me, especially when programmes that are advertised this way are usually heavily trailed, so you can't miss it anyway! The fact is, the ones on BBC1 & 2 were removed very quickly after a deluge of complaints, the same happenned to ITV, though they decided it should only apply to drama, (though it only seems to apply to ITV1- they annoyingly pop up everywhere on ITV2 & 3) so it shows viewers don't really like them either. And I still don't think they get any extra viewers anyway, most people scan the EPG and would know what's on next anyway.
