and it's worth mentioning that the elements of the current set are actually not horrific. However the sheer cheapness and strictness with which they were implemented made it so shoddy. mdta's mock of the breakfiller using the old music and the new graphics shows was is possible and yet what do we have currently? The sound of pennies being dropped into a pond and some of the shoddiest graphics ever made.

BBC1 could easily reuse all the circle era Christmas idents (including the Wallace and Gromit one), although the Doctor Who one would have to be restricted to the serious news version only, because it's outdated.

You couldn't use the full version of the Who one as Tennant was plastered all over it, but you could definetely use the short one.

Was there regional versions of the short one?

All the regions used were the short version, the long version was made for the regions but not used.

I think it's arguable we have things the wrong way around. I don't see why the BBC News Channel, regional news and bulletins can't all follow different on air looks (as things were in 1997/8 ). They're all ultimately different programmes and aside from following the general BBC branding guidelines (which I accept the regions mostly didn't until 1999) I don't see the need to make it all stick together.

On the other hand, I think TV has gone too far the other way. I think a typical BBC TV junction is a complete mess of different styles - compare a pre-2001 junction with what we have today. Whilst I think the box was flawed, I think one uniform look makes everything seem more cohesive. It's a sad state of affairs that UKTV's hotchpotch of brands seem a good amount more unified than the national broadcaster's.

Eh? BBC One, BBC Three, CBBC, Cbeebies and the radio stations all use box logo variants on the cross-promotions. What's so messy about that? Now ITV2, that's one that stands out among the crowd, since it's tilted at an angle unlike the other ITV logos. CITV doesn't match either, but that's never used on cross-promotions anyway.
