Anyone see the convoluted speech by the BBC ONE Scotland anno just now? The Sky Digital EPG lists it as "Programme not available". The whole Tai-Chi ident was shown and froze for a few seconds while she finished and then it faded into a caption and music. Was this only shown on DSat?
It's like the old days!
Yes and no. The caption certainly reminded us of a golden era but the animated background? And why the continuous music loop when BBC Scotland have some great breakdown/Ceefax CDs? We might have got one had Tony Currie been announcing...
why the continuous music loop when BBC Scotland have some great breakdown/Ceefax CDs?
Because the caption is not designed to be watched. It is for information purposes only and the average person is simply going to look at it for 10 seconds and re-tune somewhere else.
It also saves someone having to fill in a music reporting form.
When you think about it, that's quite some achievement - seeing as very few programmes manage a single continuous piece of filming that long, and it involved extremely careful choreography of the skateboarders and film crew (bearing in mind the way the point of view is changed). It's also noticeable for the fact that 3 skateboarders in the same place at the same time managed to a) stay on their boards and b) fit their tricks in so well. As I said, excellent choreography.
That said, I do wonder how many outtakes there were before they got this right.
Indeed, It's the same the same with all the idents, all 1 take, although some are more complex than others. They are a lot cleverer than they first seem!

If it was the old days you'd have had a static caption and tone and no music!
The reason for a loop is obvious. It doesn't require anyone to look after it, just like the channel barkers (including the old BBC Choice/Knowledge off-air barkers) it can just be played continuously from a server and cut to air when needed.
Why don't BBC One Scotland put out a network feed on DSat on these occasions?
Fair point during Grandstand, but take a Sunday afternoon. Scotland will often bring forward or put back the EastEnders omnibus, among other programmes so showing network on DSat would mean a split schedule for most of the afternoon - besides... if you've DSat, you've the other regions available to you.
Well it's my favourite. Is the music made by the BBC or is it done somewhere else? I have a feeling it was in 'The Piano' (soundtrack by Michael Nyman).

The music is relitively the same throughout all of the BBC ONE Idents, just changed slightly for each one (or changed more than slightly for some of them). In the case of Scateborders, it's played on the Piano.
I presume the music is composed by the BBC - the Idents themselves were designed by Lambre-Narn, but I presume they didn't compose the music that acompanies them.
