You do realise the ‘scoring system’ on Mock the Week is totally made up and something of an in joke?!

The other big difference between HIGNFY and Mock The Week which makes the latter more problematic is the presence of a subjective scoring system based solely upon how funny a singular and consistent person (who displays clear bias) finds the things that the panelists say. While only a minor part of the programme people are going to (possibly subconsciously) focus on jokes that they thing the host will find funny rather than trying to make the audience at home laugh which will inevitably mean that the jokes are largely in line with the views of the host. The concept of Mock the Week with a standing host is fundamentally flawed for an impartial broadcaster as it is just about impossible for anybody to act completely impartially in the role of host and the mere presence of a host who (intentionally or not) favours jokes from a certain viewpoint will always lead to some degree of such jokes being over represented. If the BBC want to retain the format it would be a good idea to introduce a number of different hosts across a series with different perspectives.

Are you serious?

Mock The Week has the most random, aritary scoring system of any show. In fact it's not really a scoring system, just a way of nicely finishing off each section of the programme. You're reading far too much into it.

Inciently that's one of the reasons why panel shows struggled to make it to the US - the execs struggle with a 'game' that's played for fun. The scoring on Whose Line was a bafflement to them and often got questioned. Even those with a quiz element (with point for correct answers) are only for fun as the editing ruins the continuity

That is perfectly true but I wonder if the "new" BBC will have to be especially observant to ensure that the balance is easily applied.

I think you're reading far too much into a dodgy Daily telegraph article.
Talk about silly season

It’s shows like The Mash Report, where it’s clear what Nish’s politics are, and the smug I’m right you’re wrong way he tells his jokes.

Don’t say that on twitter though, yesterday anyone who doesn’t like Nish Kumar was an extreme right wing brexiteer racist. There apparently couldn’t be any other reason why you’d not like him.

Nail on the head there mate. I have a particular issue with many on the left who talk about anyone who doesn’t agree with their politics as if they are a bad person, whereas most of us want the same outcome (a better life for people) but don’t necessarily agree on the method of getting there.

That said though The Mash Report is also the only show that regularly features a so called "right wing" comedian with Jeff Norcott.

It also comes back to the question of having impartiality for the sake of impartiality - that's been more of an issue in news and current affairs than comedy IMO, but so often we've seen in recent years people defending what should be considered undefendable because that is what people consider is required in unbiased broadcasting.

I genuinely didn't know that article existed.

Yes it was quite clear that the 'left wing comedy' thing was a nonsense when it turned out that he hadn't even said anything yet

To me the notions of left and right have been perverted by some of the media. It’s gone from political and ideological stances to something more psychological. I’ve spoken in the past about treading on eggshells and the rise of the “woke” coupled with the “perceived” bias (I say perceived because I personally haven’t seen or become aware of any) has led to a lot of fear.

Has anyone on here watched Alex Belfield on YouTube? He seems to be on an anti BBC vendetta, launching a sue the BBC fundraiser which he managed to get thousands of pounds, and then it all suddenly went quiet. People donated, and then he hardly mentions the court action he threatened the BBC?

Alex seems to have two large chips on his shoulders

He's got a whole bag of Mcains on his shoulders. A very odd troubled character going by his videos. He had a run in on Twitter with Greg Scott a few months back, he was bullying the author of a theatre review website too.

It's funny how anyone who calls themselves 'The Voice of Reason' is usually the complete opposite.
