I know that it's small, but is the 'SPORT' in the logo using BBC Reith also?

Yes, the BBC Sport logo is indeed using Reith.

Reith is now also being used on the 'PRESS RED' button on Connected TVs.

To anyone reading this and thinking "oh, I didn't know about this, that sounds interesting", it was presented by Mark Ovenden and talked about Johnston and Gill Sans. It was called Two Types: The Faces of Britain.

Here's the link if you wish to watch it:

Skip to the last 10 minutes or so for the bits about TV branding and the 1997 BBC redesign, as well as the new font.

I was watching that doc on the typefaces after the Horizion programme on driverless cars.

It was great to see the new typeface making progress on it's design phase. That same process could be well be taking hold right now as we see it implemented on the BBC Sport promos.

I'm a bit confused. I hope they don't change the blocks to BBC Reith

I was a bit confused when the justification given for the font change was that it was unsuited to long form articles on the web. What webpages does the BBC use Gill Sans for the main body of text?

Plus the usual BS about it being "optimised for the digital age", a phrase that has been recycled since about 1987 (probably)

Pretty much nowhere.

So much BS is around "digital". And I'd bet they don't even know what digital means.

Fundamentally, if the font's been good enough for television, surely it's good enough for a mobile phone screen?

Shame we didn't hear what Lambie-Nairn thinks of the change.
