New BBC corporate font: BBC Reith

I was hoping the introduction of Reith would for the channel brands to refresh, but I guess this new trailer endboard style is the best we are going to get.

For what it's worth, I like it, and think it suits the channel, using serif variants.

Since the introduction of Reith, it always looked as if Serif would suit BBC Four well, personally.

Utilising Reith on trailer endboards is a stepping stone currently. One and Two can certainly accommodate Sans for their trails. BBC Three? It only underwent a change to its trail endboards a year ago (using Arial early on was a terrible idea) - and the current font for Three forms a part of its branding. The way I see it, the new BBC font would take a backseat for BBC Three.

This is how they’re choosing to introduce the font into branding? I have second hand embarrassment from their decision making, honestly. It suits BBC Four, yes, but it’s atill confusing as do why they thought this was the best way to roll it out onto the flagship channels. What will it take to make them realise?

Watching the 'Reith' video on the BBC GEL site, it's interesting to observe which weights and styles are associated with each of the current channels' colour brands. And in the video, the mock of the BBC News website appears to use the serif font. I appreciate this isn't set in stone, but it could certainly be indicative of what's going to happen.

I speculated that BBC News could make use of both Serif and Sans.

There's nothing wrong with the current BBC News logo, so why replace it?

The GEL video on BBC Reith says it is considered a Service, like BBC Weather, BBC Sport, BBC Music - and that it will be getting a new logo using the new font.

You can ask the BBC's marketing department how much it'll cost for a licence. Suggesting any other method would be against the sites rules about copyright violations.

Hope it uses the same variant as BBC SPORT.

The Japanese Prime Minister* appears to have had the same idea (on another forum).

*May not be the real Japanese Prime Minister.

Hopefully they don't rebrand BBC Midlands as BBC West Midlands, a lovely bit of naming tradition that's lasted since 1927.

Well they've spelt Gill as Gil in the same image, so I wouldn't be too worried.
