I know they're not going to make the BBC blocks Reith, but if they did, what would it look like?

It doesn't look good. It would need a custom C shape to fill the block better, and if you do that, there is little point changing it at all, considering the costs that would be involved. Smile

The current BBC logo also has the advantage of becoming so ingrained within the public perception of the BBC, and is far too timeless to even consider replacing it.

The mock-up of the BBC blocks with Reith used says a lot about this - it doesn’t suit it as well as Gill did; and for such a small change, probably pointless to do so.

Wow. That's amazing, cheers Martin. Who'd have thought just changing the font in the blocks would make such a difference. It looks terrible doesn't it. Show's you're right MetalGearRex - it's ingrained.

20 years on and you wonder if they will change the logo again. After many alterations with the blocks and lettering this one seems to have stuck, and like Martin shows a change for changes sake would not look as good. Let's not give them any ideas!

Agreed. Keep Gill Sans into the BBC logo, just refresh the brands around the logo.

Plus how often would the old version be used by mistake by those with an untrained eye if they changed it? It'd be like the shambles following the change of the BBC Two logo from Gill to Avenir, but across every BBC outlet, and beyond.

In fact, having bold text in the news logo might be beneficial for this reason - at least the change would be more obvious, and we'd hopefully be less likely to see the wrong version used when a regional news programme decides to change its titles. Wink

If Reith is ever to be used for a main BBC Logo, the whole logo would have to change, so it doesn't look like a mistake, and wont be misused. But until the current logo stops working to deliver the message the BBC wants to deliver, or fails on a technical level - I don't see a need to change it.

As I've said before (possibly earlier in this thread) the main argument for a change in the logo would be how it isn't always clear when reduced to small sizes, especially for things like app logos. However on the other side even if you can't read "BBC" when the logo is illegible it's still quite recogniseable as the BBC logo. If it did change it would be pointless just to change the font - they might as well go ahead and evolve the logo as well.

Will say the Reith version looked awful when I read this thread earlier on my phone - just scrolling up now on my PC and though it's different it's looking better on a second, larger, viewing.

Let's just be honest.

BBC Reith looks like a slightly better version of Verdana in upper case. In lower case, it looks like a lazy Google font.

It looks nothing like verdana

It looks like Verdana to me and I am the acknowledged King of fonts on this forum.

Sad Luddite freak!
