I agree that BBC One should have a numerical logo, but I think the current 2 is just as outdated as the 1.

The '1' looked old at the time, being 1920s style. The '2', by comparison, is utterly timeless. Deliberate choices, for sure.

I don't think the three lines for Three works, quite frankly. It's just... Three lines, one with a bit missing.

The pillars of THREE represent the three aims of BBC THREE online; Make Me Laugh, Make Me Think and Give Me a Voice. Works effectively if they’re going through that memo.

To reverse what you have said: "The Oneness theme is better than a bunch of random helicopter shots from round the country with a stupid red and orange balloon milling around for a few seconds."

Getting a hot air balloon to fly around some beautiful scenery and then filming it from a great height takes much more effort than somebody grabbing a camera and saying "right, stand there, hold on for a minute... okay, now go do something else".

Is that the measure of a successful branding campaign now? How much effort has gone into it?

It's a shame that this BBC One discussion is now being held in here too. Sure, it's kinda relevant but it's been done to death (fortnightly) in the BBC One thread, seems a bit futile and distracting to have it here too.

I don't know how much more inclusive you could be than a globe showing the Earth.

Racist.

Can I just say that I've really appreciated the last two pages and the old-school TVF humour. Thanks, guys.

I forgot how striking the soundtrack was. The idents reflected the BBC of the time - bold and self-confident. If the BBC is to survive, it needs to inject some of that back into its corporate identity, and quickly.

A confident and proud BBC you say? A BBC like that might make something like this then:

The BBC of today... not so much.

Well no effort when into this one and the majority think it's s**t, so yeah. Probably.

Speaking of small people, he'll be 24 years old next month ....

Loved the Small People production.

On a related note, it was used in a 2007 episode of BBC Four's long running and occasional treat Timeshift programme as part of a wider look of children's programming:

IIRC Timeshift is probably now the longest running strand/programme on BBC Four dating back to its launch.

I think there was a glimpse of the new BBC typeface on the Red Button's TV Feed. It was a BBC Sport Red Button slide which briefly appeared during a live broadcast of the USPGA Championship and then it returned to Quail Hallow.

I have it set as the display font for my laptop and I must say it does look very nice and clean. I hope it gets fully rolled out across all the BBC channels and services.
