If people think the vast majority of viewers are back timing their viewing they are very much mistaken. They will either watch live or record the whole thing and watch at a later date. Nobody will kill time for 12 mins and then start watching the 9pm drama at 9:12pm. Many people welcome the the breaks to have a breather.

My wife and I do that a lot with both one hour and two hour dramas on ITV. Vera, for instance, works out about right if you start playback at around twenty five minutes past the starting time. Midsomer Murders likewise. And for one hour productions 12-15 minutes is about right.

You don't have to finish at exactly the same time you know.

If it's a busy TV night I'll be strategic with my scheduling but generally speaking there's rarely more than one or two shows a night I'd watch anyway.

Back to Bake Off and I assume C4 will retain a weekend repeat. Its a show I've never chosen to watch but often caught the repeats at the weekend when there is nothing else on.

Some people have strong bladders, no need for intra programme refreshment and a decent attention span. A two hour plus continuous drama or other programme not interrupted is perfect and should be the norm. Any avoidance of what's mostly intrusive and demeaning advertising is to be congratulated.

No it certainly shouldn't, what a daft thing to say. British TV wouldn't be anywhere near as strong as it is without advertising helping commercial channels flourish.

I don't understand why ad interruption bothers people so much, it's not like it's a new thing. Don't expect something for nothing.

Back to the programme. The new trailer is just as it should be, demonstrating that the bar a few faces the show is the same. That is, after all what Channel 4 paid for.

We know that the first episode is on Tuesday 29th August at 8pm, have we heard when the new series of Extra Slice will begin and if it will air on Channel 4 or More 4?

Extra Slice is Thursdays at 10pm for 50 minutes.

Extra Slice is Thursdays at 10pm for 50 minutes.

And it's on Channel 4, not More4, interestingly

Of course they're not new, but over the last 20 years both the frequency of breaks, and their length have increased beyond what many consider to be a tolerable level. Also, not helped by the utterly tiresome sponsorship break bumpers.

I grew up with 70s and 80s ITV and C4 [1], and all was fine, but the increased level today, coupled with the technical means to avoid them easily means I really can't be bothered to endure ad breaks anymore.

[1] And I rarely skipped ads when watching recordings

I wonder how long it will be before some confused soul, complains to Ofcom (via the national press first) that Channel 4 are not sticking to the 9 minutes of adverts promise in the 8pm hour - and then include, the programme break bumpers, the two programme sponsor tags (unless they are intigrated into one), the Channel 4 logo moving blocks 'flash' and any Channel 4 promos/trailers tagged onto the end of the break -

all of which don't count towards the 9 advert minutage.

It's 12 minutes an hour, not 9 minutes.

Average of 12mins an hour in peaktime 7pm-11pm (or was it 6pm-10pm?) and average of 9mins an hour otherwise IIRC. Unique to the PSB channels I think as most of the other channels can have an average of 12mins all day, unless that's changed again.

From the Ofcom COSTA regulations:
Quote:

2. Time devoted to television advertising and teleshopping spots on any channel in any clock hour must not exceed 12 minutes.

3. Non public service channels must show no more than an average of 12 minutes of television advertising and teleshopping spots for every hour of transmission across the broadcasting day, of which no more than 9 minutes may be television advertising.

4. On public service channels, time devoted to television advertising and teleshopping spots must not exceed:
i. an average of 7 minutes per hour for every hour of transmission time across the broadcasting day; and
ii. an average of 8 minutes per hour between 18:00 and 23:00.

5. Advertising breaks during programmes on public service channels may not exceed 3 minutes 50 seconds, of which advertising and teleshopping spots may not exceed 3 minutes and 30 seconds

So there's scope to have quite long breaks, but it does mean sacrificing minutage elsewhere in the evening - for example by only scheduling one 30s spot advertising Dubai during the news.

A repeat on E4? Thought Bake Off would be more targeted towards More4's demo?
