I came across this at TV Insite -- this is very unusual, it's never happened before -- guess that networks are just after money after all
It's official: The four major broadcast networks are getting together for a Friday-night primetime telethon to raise funds for victims of last week's terrorist attacks.
In an unprecedented move, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC are teaming up for America: A Tribute to Heroes, a two-hour commercial-free simulcast that will originate from both New York and Los Angeles. The event will be carried live in Eastern and Central time zones from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on tape delay in Mountain and Pacific regions.
Celebrities signed on for the event include George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Robert DeNiro, Tom Hanks, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder. TV stars include Sela Ward, Conan O'Brien, Calista Flockhart, Kelsey Grammer and Ray Romano.
The simulcast will be underwritten by the four networks and available to all rival cable and broadcast networks at no cost. So far, Telemundo and Lifetime Television have agreed to carry the feed, while many others are expected to come in on it over the next few days. MTV: Music Television is leaning that way, and it may help to secure talent and to produce video packages. Many other cable networks are expected to carry it, as well.
The WB Television Network and United Paramount Network are expected to carry it, but executives at both networks were not commenting.
