Surely the old broadcasting adage would be used in these circumstances...."It's alright leaving us"!

Did anyone found out if Paradise beach was broadcast by any other ITV company bar Grampian TV?

What would then happen with schools programmes, up until June 1987? These were networked by ATV then Central, from Birmingham. What if a red phone call was needed?

As I said before, the nominated contractor would originate the call on behalf of the originating company. And obviously the red phone wouldn't be used for problems between individual contractors. Control rooms had plenty of telephones - internal lines, exchange lines, ex-directory lines......

I see - so the red phone would be used if the nominated contractor needed to inform all or several companies about a scheduling change or ongoing problem. In the case of schools going down, I assume the local companies would initially phone ATV/Central and ask for information, and ATV having received up to 13 calls would then give Thames an update and they would then inform all regions.

No. In your example, Schools came from ATV via Thames. In the event of a problem, Thames presentation would take over until the problem was solved. And the red phone was a system whereby the nominated contractor would initiate the call and then hand over to the originating company if they needed to talk to everybody. In the event of a fully networked programme dropping off, contractors would fill locally and wait until the red phone rang. They would only ring the originating company if it was providing a one-to-one feed.

Basically the red phone was London based, and so if a problem occurred elsewhere, Central would phone Thames or LWT, tell them, and then London would take control?

I remember reading ages ago that Thames at one stage used to close down on a Friday evening with a full closedown and not acknowledge that there were any programmes again until Monday - does anyone have any caps of such a closedown? I have a feeling it might have been before home video recording equipment was popular.

1968 was when Friday used to be the start of the weekend franchise, to be precise in August 1968 when LWT took over the franchise from ATV. 7.00pm was the start time until the end of 1981, then 5.15pm from January 1982 and the rest was history....

From the clips on YouTube (there are several available) from the 1980s/90s Thames would give LWT a nod here or there, but this was as time went on. LWT were the same with their Sunday night closedowns, they'd only promote TV-am and ILR.

I think I've seen a handover where Philip Elsmore actually name checked Peter Lewis as he handed over.
